“ARE YOU a Good Scout… PREPARED”

Prepare For A Natural Disaster – Your Family And Your Homestead…

prepare-natural-disaster

Natural disasters happen all the time all over the world, fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. There is pandemonium and chaos, fear and heartbreak each time. Is it preventable? Most of the time, no.We are at the mercy of Mother Nature. But there are some things you can do to prepare for a natural disaster. Do you know how to prepare you, your family, home, pets, and livestock?

Right now, Marjory and her family are preparing for Hurricane Harvey, which is going to hit the Texas coast today.

Her homestead is expecting 20+ inches of rain and sustained winds of 40 mph. She says that is 2/3 of their annual rainfall.

Marjory knows how to prepare for a natural disaster. They’ve been to the grocery store, cleaned up the homestead, boarded up the windows, and scattered cover crop seeds in the pasture. In her words, “We’ve been broadcasting seed for the fall planting of pasture cover crops. Yes, the time to plant is before the rains or your likelihood of germination goes way down—you never know if/when it will rain again.”

Look for updates on Marjory right here on this blog post!

Prepare your family for a natural disaster

In 2004, my family and I were living in Florida. We went through 4 hurricanes back-to-back. Two boys, two cats, and I were huddled in the inner bathroom of our house. I lost three refrigerators full of food, and we lost power for weeks each time. It was the tornadoes spawned by the storm that finally got us. A 100 ft. pine tree with a 6-ft. diameter missed my car by inches. Our neighbors were not so lucky.

Make a plan

It’s better to prepare for an emergency or a disaster long before it happens. Choose reliable information sources, and know the warning systems in your area. Talk with your family about your plan, even young children will understand and not be so frightened. Be sure to include your pets and even neighbors in your plans.

  • Choose a safe place to meet.
  • Decide how you will contact each other (if cell service or electricity are out)
  • How will you find each other?
  • What will you do in different situations (fire, tornado, hurricane, earthquake, zombie apocalypse)?

Okay that last one was a bit of a joke, but all joking aside … what is your family’s disaster plan?

Create a disaster kit or bug out bag

Your emergency kit should be stocked and restocked regularly. Be sure to consider all of your needs and don’t forget your pets! You and your family may need to survive on your own for several days. You’ll need to be prepared with foodwater, and other supplies for at least 72 hours.

Basic Disaster Supply Kit, or Bug Out Bag

Store everything in airtight plastic bags or put your entire disaster supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry plastic bins or duffel bags. Check the items regularly to make sure they work and have not expired.

  • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. This is for drinking and sanitation.
  • Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio or NOAA Weather radio with tone alert. (Don’t forget extra batteries in your kit.)
  • Flashlight – battery-powered, solar-powered, or hand-crank (Personally, I prefer the hand-crank. I know it will work)
  • First Aid Kit – Check it regularly to make sure it is stocked.
  • Extra batteries – make sure you replace these regularly or use rechargables that get charged regularly.
  • Whistle to signal for help – A whistle is much easier to use than your voice and carries over a longer distance. Make sure that each family member has one.
  • Dust mask – in case there is debris in the air
  • Plastic sheeting – makes a great impromptu shelter
  • Duct tape- I never go anywhere without duct tape!
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Manual can opener for your food
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with solar charger or a battery backup

Personal Emergency Supplies

  • Prescription meditations
  • Non-prescription medications (pain-relievers, anti-diarrhea, antacids, and laxatives)
  • Glasses and contact lens solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream
  • Pet supplies – Crate or carrier, pet food, and extra water for your pet
  • Cash
  • Way to cook food
  • Family documents (copies of insurance policies, identifications and bank account records, saved in a waterproof, portable container)
  • Sleeping bag and warm blanket for each person
  • Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate and sturdy shoes
  • Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper to disinfect water
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches in waterproof container
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant
  • Mess kit, cup
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles, cards, or other activities for children

After you create your disaster kit, remember to check it regularly.

Keep your canned food in a cool, dry place and replace expired items as needed. Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic containers. Rethink your needs each year.

Prepare your homestead for a natural disaster

Now that your family, pets, and you are safe during a natural disaster. Do you know how to prepare your homestead so it stays running?

  • Remove any debris that could become a dangerous flying object. This includes tomato cages!
  • Generator – if you have solar or wind power, it’s still a good idea to have a backup generator in case your alternative energy sources are damaged or destroyed by the natural disaster.
  • Reliable water source
  • Secure your livestock and small animals – have extra food, water, and bedding ready for at least a week. Have your halters and leads ready.
  • Stock up on vet supplies, including bandages, antibiotics, supplements
  • Make sure housing, food, and supplies for small animals (chickens, ducks, rabbits) are ready to withstand high winds or rising water. Create a make-shift pen in your garage, if necessary.
  • Put heavy farm equipment under cover and tie it down.
  • Tools & gloves – There will be a lot of mending after a natural disaster.
  • Keep a written inventory of all livestock, including breeding and expense records, with your other important family documents.
  • Make sure all animal branding, tagging, and other identification information are up-to-date.

“Our Last Verification…Verified”

Everybody  in AMERICA – – made plans to see – – for their selves – – with their very special “GLASSES” to protect their eyes – –  just exactly what was to rake place  in the heavens above us.

“Al and Alan”  did verify that  with their very own “GLASSES” – – that they could see just exactly  – – all that was predicted to happen – – did happen at exactly the time for “Missouri” to have its place on the map of the “UNITED STATES”   – – making that old saying for Missouri – – “We do believe it – – If we see it” – – so for all the world – – “IT”  did happen – – and right here at home… in MISSOURI

“Sometimes and  usually only once in a life time – – will a person see such wonders – – that take place in our skies above – – involving the outer “PLANETS” – – and some of us have  the “NEED” to “KNOW MORE”   – of all the effects of these wonders – – when they take place – – and what the effect will be – – on EARTH and our neighboring PLANETS – – “Will people from EARTH – – ever be able to live on a “NEIGHBOR PLANET” – – and at some time there after – – return to EARTH – – to tell about the “wonders” just waiting “OUT THERE” … for us???

In all of the “NEWS  REPORTS” on radio and TELEVISION – – no one mention a word about the wonders of EARTH and all the PLANETS in this system – – and that our CREATOR, the Almighty Yahweh – –  is the only CREATOR – – that and did make all of these wonders available for us mere humans on EARTH – – to marvel about – – and wish we could do – – but can not do – – as we too … are only creatures on the created earth – – and here to give THANKS and enjoy – – and to take  care of  the gifts we receive.

“To our Almighty Yahweh… be the praise and glory for all the wondrous things…  He has made – – for us  while here on HIS EARTH – – to take care of for the short time that we are here – – and to always be grateful  in our THANKS to HIM – – that we  received such wonderful gifts to enjoy.”  DV

WHO IS YOUR REMINDER?

Posted: 21 Aug 2017 07:52 PM PDT

KAREN COMBS is my reminder to be always at work for others.

This happened more regularly than I really want to admit. A moment of exhausted frustration reared its ugly head just when I wanted to make a hopefully simple, quick teacher trek to the copier and then run back to my room to accomplish a million other tasks.

https://frtim.files.wordpresscom/2014/04/1581541396_7ce4936d25_o.jpg

But then that quick trip turned into a blind, confused, unbelieving stare at the copier. Sometimes, it was accompanied by guttural moans that I wished were silent.

And then a calm voice nearby always offered, “Can I help you”  or “Is there something I can do for you?”

I tried to be mindful that she, too, had a million things on her plate to accomplish along with answering the phone and buzzing people into the building and getting field trip drivers lined up and organizing a school wide fundraiser and …

Karen Combs helping another teacher problem solve.

So, my polite answer was that I was just trying to figure something out.

But then before I knew what to do, I felt her presence alongside me asking, “What have you tried?”

As she miraculously worked her way through the quandary of the machine, her response to my frustrations were always in agreement, “I hear ya!” While I pushed buttons at her prompting, she would say, “No worries, I’ve had to try this before.”

She ALWAYS gave me her good side.
She ALWAYS made the time for my issues.
She ALWAYS made it seem like I could accomplish things on my own, but she was just going to stand there beside me.
She ALWAYS made me feel like I was on the right track.
She ALWAYS made me feel like I didn’t need to get frustrated because I could master it.
She ALWAYS offered a possible guess or solution.
She ALWAYS validated my problems.

She stayed with me through the problem until it was solved. On those days when my teacher time ran out at that copier, she even offered to complete my work and bring it to me!

I know I fall very short of being that kind of a reminder for people, but I am ever grateful for the person she encourages me to be just upon every remembrance of her.

She is my reminder to look around and see the needs people have.
She is my reminder to be a sounding board for others’ frustrations.
She is my reminder to offer help to people.
She is my reminder to put others before myself.

I’m thankful that our paths crossed and that she is all of those reminders for me.

Who is your reminder to be a problem solver with others?

Just so you know  – – I have a favorite verse from the Bible –  and it is Philippians 4: 6 and 7… read that verse…  several times and see if this  poster below is a version of it – – and then the song … “Don’t Worry” is just an old song that I remember from way back – and when those two words – – “Don’t Worry” … were so often used.

The “Don’t Worry” song I remember – – will go with the above  shortened verse from the BIBLE     –

“50 Years ago – Chief Curtis Brostron”

It is just  too hard to believe…  some of the old news items – – that one will find – – when they take the time to look through old boxes of memories.

This “NEWS” of  the day – – January of 1967 – –  my husband,  Lee passed away  – – and in this  clipping   – – we see the “Chief of Police  Curtis Brostron”  crown  Miss Carol-Lynn Howard … the Lily Day Queen.

This ceremony took place  at City Hall – – to mark the opening  of the 1967  Easter Seal campaign  of the St. Louis Society …  for  Crippled Children.

The above news story  was just above the story in the ‘newspaper clip’… that is posted above this one.

“WHY did I clip this story?”

Before  “Chief Brostron”  becoming ‘Chief” – – he and my husband,  Lee  Aldrich were riding partners on the St.Louis Police Department – – and very good partners – – if I say so myself. – – So with me knowing  “Mrs. Susan L. Cost” – – and her story right below the “Chief’s” story – – just had to clip and save – – and with all kinds of  memories  – – to remember …”Lee” – – this was the week to find  this old news – – and with the computer  and “fourgrandmas.com” – – just had to let the whole wide world know… and remember if they remember either one of these fine people?
