“Using Onions for the Cure for TODAY”

Just remember the times as they were for me and my brothers some seventy years ago. Seems that some kind of a “virus” will pop up when people need to check on what they are doing and causing them to take a certain amount of time to stop some of the things that they are doing and make corrective changes for their community

This photo is an old photo that I have when we were in the German St. Vincent Orphan Home.

The next photo is an old photo of my brothers and me on the “Stage” a spot where my Dad could find enough Sunlight, in order to take a picture with his old “box type” camera in this “Auditorium” when my parents came out on a “Visiting Sunday” afternoon.

You see that there was only a very small square spot of “Sunshine” from one of the windows hitting the spot for us to crunch together and be … hope fully seem as if we were enjoying ourselves?

As I remember…there was a period of time in the Fall of the year, that so many of the children were getting sick… exactly from what…I do not still remember, but what I do remember was …what was done to cure the situation.

In the rooms and corridors throughout the building… you would find several  “ONIONS” together and each “onion” would be cut wide open,  so as to sit as a collecting agent of the “germs”…. these “Onions” would be in dishes just high enough to be out of reach of a child, but where the children would be.

As  I recall “ONIONS”  were placed in all areas where the children would be for long periods of time,  no one died as it did smell of “ONIONS” for a long time and after a period of time… all the children were all back to the regular schedule that we were on.

Seems to me, that whatever germs were flying around through the airways of the building, all the NUNS and children were well, after a short period of time and back to the regular schedule.

Just maybe, TODAY… we should have lots of cutup  “onions” sitting around, collecting the germs and everyone would be healthy again!

“Do You have a Good Boss or a Bad Boss”

A bad job with a Good Boss is Better than a Good Job with a bad boss

My boss made a mistake on a project we were working on and instead of owning his mistake, he said it was my fault. I sat through that meeting feeling shocked and disappointed. Although this happened a couple of years ago. I remember the details quite well.

When we left the meeting he told me, “You are a good sport.” I knew I needed to start planning my exit strategy. I loved my job but I couldn’t trust my boss. He would throw you under the bus in a heartbeat to make himself look good. In spite of how good a job is, once you don’t have a manager that has your back, you will be miserable in that job.

” A bad boss can take a good staff and destroy it, causing the best employees to flee and the remainder to lose all motivation.”

People don’t leave bad jobs, They leave bad bosses. A boss creates fear and makes work drudgery. Most of the time an employee has an issue with a company, it is something relating to their boss. You spend half of your life at work, and your immediate supervisor determines the atmosphere. Life is too short to spend 40+ hours a week in constant stress and misery.

A bad boss can destroy everything from team morale to the actual company. A recent study says that 56% of employees would turn down a 10% raise to stay with a great boss. The corporate world is full of managers and lacks leaders. Leaders build people up. Managers pull people down. Leaders are those comfortable and secure in who they are whilst managers are competing with their subordinates.

Studies show having a bad boss raises a worker’s chance of having a heart attack by as much as 60 per cent.

Working for a bad boss was actually more of a risk factor for heart disease than smoking, lack of exercise, or being overweight, the researchers calculated. What was it about a bad manager that increased the risk of heart disease? The stress and anxiety caused by unfeasible targets, lack of support, unfair practices and threats of punishment. If your manager doesn’t like you, you are on shaky ground. You will always have to keep making sure you dot your i’s and cross your t’s because they can easily set you up to fail or succeed. High levels of stress is directly linked stress with atherosclerosis, the disease of the arteries that in turn causes heart disease.

Never underestimate the impact of working in a toxic environment. It will permeate into every area of your life. Try to move to a different job in the same company or another company with more competent management. On the other hand, if you do have a good boss, really appreciate them. Good bosses are capable of taking an organization and people to new heights.

“Dial (O) for Operator…I Just May Answer”

“NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY”

“Work 24/7 – Night Shift”

Have you ever  “WORKED” the  “NIGHT SHIFT”  and then… the first thing in the morning, you leave work at  7:00 a.m. and at “eight in the morning”  you need to find a parking place as you must be at COLLEGE…  before you hardly know what you are doing…   and the big topper of this day… your first class will be… Physical Ed?

How did I get myself into this…  doing too much stuff… not thinking about my getting any SLEEP?

One never knows why the things…   that we plan to do … can we do,   and for just how long…  put ourselves in work and learning positions,  that if we would have really used our brains to do some planning… surely we would have made better plans.

It was not until I was in COLLEGE… that,  I finally did learn  “HOW TO STAND ON MY HEAD!”      (Do not die laughing!)

Just think about it… work all night… then drive miles to COLLEGE  and in a hurry, can not be late,   have to change into my GYM clothes…  and as tired…  as I might be,  well just forget that …  there I am standing…  on my head!

BUT…  NOW I KNOW the correct way to get up and all balanced correctly … as if I really needed to learn how to stand on my HEAD… never since…  have I been required to do it…  but  NOW if ever I have to stand on my head … hope not now… as I am not that young teenybopper… finally,  I have that lesson in LIFE  … mastered.

That is the “BOSS” …  winding her chair till it is the right height,  guessing that her name is “FRANKIE”  and then next to her a good friend “MARY MURPHY”  and have another photo of her at our office door… at Christmas time when our office and everything was all decorated and she is wishing everyone a “MERRY CHRISTMAS”   so that…  and if you ever take the time to look through the different “POSTS”  you will see her.

And the next lady seated is another “MARY”  but,   her last name can not remember and when I put this camera down … I will be sitting at the next open position where I left my headset… and depending on the night we may and or we might not be too busy.

This is way back… when …  you did have to dial “OPERATOR” to be connected to most telephone numbers and when there were also those  “COIN  BOX PHONES” …  and lots of them all over…  almost every business would have one or more depending on the traffic through their business.

“YOU are looking at the way it was  fifty to sixty years ago!”

“NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY”

NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY – April 25

NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY

On April 25th, we observe National Telephone Day. Around the world, there are 9.82 billion mobile phones. And while some predicted the landline to be obsolete by 2020, there are still about 931 million landlines around the world.

Obtaining a Patent

The correct answer to a trivia question like “Who invented the telephone?” is the name on the patent. In this case, the whole world knows the answer is Alexander Graham Bell. Had his attorney been delayed by foul weather or poor planning, the answer may be a different name.

On February 14, 1876, Marcellus Bailey, one of Bell’s attorneys, rushed into the U.S. Patent office in Boston to file the patent for what would be the telephone.

Later the same day, Elisha Gray filed a patent caveat for a similar device. A caveat is an intent to file for a patent.

There was also a third contender. Antonio Meucci filed a caveat in November of 1871 for a talking telegraph but failed to renew the caveat due to hardships.

Because Bell submitted his record first, the patent office awarded Bell the patent on March 7, 1876. Gray contested this decision in court, but without success.

Alexander Graham Bell

Born March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, Bell taught at a boys’ boarding school. The sounds of speech were an integral part of his life. His father developed a “Visible Speech” system for deaf students to communicate. Bell would later become a friend and benefactor of Helen Keller.

Three days after the patent was approved, Bell spoke the first words by telephone to his assistant. “Mr.Watson, come here! I want to see you!”

By May, Bell and his team stood prepared for a public demonstration. And there would be no better place than the grand stage of the World’s Fair in Philadelphia. On May 10, 1876, in a crowded Machinery Hall, a man’s voice transmitted from a small horn and carried out through a speaker to the audience.

One year later, the White House installed its first phone. The telephone revolution began.

Bell Telephone Company was founded on July 9, 1877, and they installed the first public telephone lines from Boston to Sommerville, Massachusetts, the same year.  By the end of the decade, nearly 50,000 phones existed in the United States.  In May of 1967, phone companies across the country installed the one-millionth telephone.

NATIONAL TELEPHONE DAY HISTORY

In May of 1967, the 100 millionth telephone line was installed in the United States. On May 11th, governors and dignitaries for U.S. territories joined President Lyndon Johnson on the largest conference call ever held up to that date. Each governor, dignitary, and the President were issued gold phones to commemorate the day. At the same time, a proclamation was issued declaring May 12th as National Telephone Day.

“NATIONAL TAKE A CHANCE DAY”

NATIONAL TAKE A CHANCE DAY – April 23

NATIONAL TAKE A CHANCE DAY

Every year on April 23rd, National Take a Chance Day encourages us to break out of our comfort zone.

Most of us have unaccomplished goals or dreams.  What if this was the day to take the chance to make them happen?  Even if it is just the first step toward that goal, it will be one step closer than before.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did.  So throw off the bowline, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.  ~ Mark Twain

Uncertain where to start?  Polish up that resume’, sign up for a foreign language class, or buy a pair hiking shoes.  Those are all first steps to taking chances on new jobs, traveling to a foreign country, or hiking that trail.

Ready for a bigger chance?  Buy that plane ticket or finally, take your business plan to the bank.  It’s time to broaden those horizons.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalTakeAChanceDay

Celebrate your goals or dreams by taking a chance and getting started today!  Share on social media using #NationalTakeAChanceDay
