“Red Hot Tamales”

In the late  ’50s, I left  St.Louis for Florida  and now that I’m back, notice  some big changes.  No , Hot Tamale Man,  with  those red hot tamales going through the streets of St.Louis, and many other parts of the city. You could hear  “red hot tamale – get your red hot tamale, here” for blocks before he got to your area!

In north  St.Louis where we lived at maybe 8:30 pm  and depending how many stops and how long, you would get your money ready to go as soon as you figured he was near! When you heard the sing/song “Hot Tamale song getting close by, out the door you would fly, maybe only a couple of blacks, make your purchase and with a good handful of  hot tamales, run as fast as possible to enjoy while “Hot”!

We were still , “radio listeners”,  and on certain nights you just had to catch the next episode  of your favorite show, in fact you could stand out side and hear the same show, everybody was listening to the same thing, but not everybody had  “Hot Tamales”  to enjoy while the show was on!  Today , we are missing a heck of a lot of  “Good Stuff!”
