“Pet Milk Co., – Friendly Kitchen program”

Make a “FRIEND” Today~

In life, no  one  knows   –  how,  what or when  we  will meet or get to know  someone for a  very,  very, short time. The world just keeps a turning and no  one thinks that  this is the last chance to be  “KIND”  to  newly made friends!

In  January 1967,  someone I met, a Mrs. Herbert W. Cost  –  also known as  “Mary Lee Taylor”  with the  Friendly Kitchen program on radio for the  Pet Milk Co., was  living in  a nursing home in St.Louis. I knew she was not in the best of health and   to make her feel better,   I asked her if she would like…  for me to take her out for  a day?  So, I made arrangements to take her to my home.

Since she was  popular on the radio cooking show , and gave out tips and recipes to the listening audience…  for a good many years, thought   that she  would enjoy meeting my Aunt Irene Riley, who was in the cooking world  “a superb  chef!”   Also,  my  Father  was available  to be at my house and he said he would prepare a meal for all of us,  including my two sons.

We had a good time , good food, good conversation with a house full of cooks…  with lots to share. And…  of course my sons  probably played some  very  good music.  An afternoon  that we could not forget.

Sometimes when we were  all talking…    I  did  take notice that Mrs. Cost was maybe  sleeping and or  nodding  and I found out later – – –  from Aunt Irene   –  Mrs. Cost  may have had heart problems  or poor circulation  –  maybe not enough blood getting to the head?

But, a day or two later  –  I received the nicest  “Thank you Card”  –  and  Mrs. Cost remember everyone with her thanks and how much she enjoyed the day with my family!

It was sad for all us  –   when just a month later  to be informed that Mrs. Cost died of a  heart attack.  She was such a sweet person  and so friendly…  it was easy to see why she did so well with  the  “Pet Milk   Friendly Kitchen program!”   This was  before “TV”  and  without seeing her   –  she did marvelous with just her voice  –   her  tips and recipes.  No wonder so many women since  her radio show,    figured  to get into “TV” with a  similar  cooking show.

All of  us,  were only together  for those few short months and all I have as a remembrance   is her thank you cad and the newspaper write-up of her life.

Making friends now  could be for a short time   –  here  –  but   –    could  also  be   for all eternity     –  someday!

“Mary Lee Taylor’s” – Recipe…

img153

Some time ago I had posted a newspaper clipping about “Mary Lee Taylor” and how I was able to make friends  – with her at the Nursing Home”   –  that she was living in –  1966-1967 and then later brought her to my home for the day  – and also my Aunt Irene  and Mother were also guests.

I’m thinking that the name of the nursing home  – was the “Fountain House Nursing Home” on Pine Street – but it is hard to just remember lots of extra names and places.

Anyway – the reason for the above recipe for  “Pineapple Upside Down Cake”  – is that like I was saying yesterday – when you start to go through old boxes of papers – it is hard to tell – just exactly what rare items of “OLDEN TIMES ” –  you might find???  – Today, I was going through a small recipes box – that I do not believe has been gone through  – for many years?? I have a collection of recipes  in boxes  of all sorts and sizes – and a couple of book cases just full of nothing but “COOK BOOK” – the results of having joined one  – too many “BOOK CLUBS” – and in addition to my collection – all of my Mother’s and Aunt’s collection of recipes!

The above recipe of “Mary Lee Taylor’s ” for the Pineapple Upside Down Cake –  has me really thinking twice about my thoughts – because just last week I was at the store  and buying all the ingredients for the Pineapple Upside Down Cake –  so now there is no excuse for me to put off this baking project? More importantly to me  – is the fact that I have found a recipe of “Mary Lee Taylor” – as  I only remembered hearing her give her recipes on the radio (KM OX)  – so I am guessing that my Mother wrote to the “PET MILK CO.” for this recipe because on the other side is  another –  recipe  for “LEMON Sponge Pudding”  – which also includes the “Pet Milk Co.” logo!

So, in these cold weather months – it has to be more enjoyable and “FUN” just  making “GOOD EATS” from the “KITCHEN”  – and everyone will remember forever – all the good times  – together!!
