“NATIONAL PARENTS’ DAY” “Celebrate with Your Parents”

National Parents’ Day honors all parents on the fourth Sunday in July. No matter where our parents may be, this day serves to celebrate their important role in our lives.

In May we celebrated mothers, and in June we celebrated fathers.  It follows that in July we can bring all our parents together and show them some appreciation all at once.

Parents play a vital role in the lives of children. From our birth, parents protect, teach, provide and serve as role models. As part of a family, we look to them for guidance. We mirror their behavior and learn to be a core part of our communities.

Throughout our lives, our parents lead us to be independent thinking individuals. As many of us know, those efforts can be challenging. The world is changing as quickly as they grow. Often the sleepless nights and worry seem endless. On this particular Sunday, we honor all parents who do everything to raise and protect their children.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Spend some time with your parents or visit someone who was like a parent to you. For those with small children, give yourself a pat on the back. Set the laundry aside and go to the park. Find a moment alone with each of your children and show them how glad you are to be their parent. Post on social media using #NationalParentsDay and encourage others to celebrate the day.

HISTORY

President Bill Clinton established National Parents’ Day in 1994 when he signed Congressional Resolution (36 U.S.C. § 135) into law. The recognized the “…uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.” Republican Senator Trent Lott introduced the bill.

“Celebrate with your  “PARENTS Today” – as you never know just how long,  that you will all be able to have Fun Together – “Your Parents”  gave to you the best start in LIFE – that they could. Do all that you can,  to enjoy the wonderful LIFE and FAMILY  you received from our CREATOR – by passing on good memories with the next generation, and doing all,  that you can to amke them happy, so that when we meet again – we can recall only good memories, forever!”

“Sit back and REMEMBER the BEST of TIMES”

If you are 70 years of age and from St. Louis, You MUST watch all of this!!

“Click on and enjoy the good ole days – that I remember”

This is such a great video…. So, enjoy it. For those of you who experienced the iconic 1950s, a decade that will never be repeated….

The cars are fantastic. The music was so wonderful, romantic, nostalgic, magical…. We were rich and did not know it!  We were innocent and thought we were experienced. We were very fortunate to have lived in such an era. Enjoy the past as revealed here. Who knows what the future will bring?   We can only  hope it’s not more tattoos, grunge, gobbledegook music, rapper noise….
Where, oh where, are all the white sport coats… and all those pink carnations.  I miss all that.

“Let “ME” Sew Up – Something Special -TODAY”

“Dress-Maker and Dummy – Dream Designer”

“Did you ever want to make your own clothes?” Well that is what I did after three years  in school and thought,  “I had it   made in the shade!”

So as a nosy person, that I am,  was searching through lots of my Mother’s closets to see what she had,  that I could borrow,  or just plain ole use.

Would you believe that, I had found one of  those, in a “box kit” make a “dress-maker’s dummy”  just for your own body. You would slip into this “jersey” type  roll of material,  have someone run around your body, with this roll of  tape,  from the bust area on  down to mid thigh area,  using all  of the tape, round after round,  just forming a body of iron around your body. Then this other person would,  using  something sharp, cut through this tight fitting shield with that  sharp instrument,  from under the arm pit area, and  on  a straight line,  down on both sides of your body.

Next, you tape these two pieces, front and back mold of your body,  together.   You will  now for sure, have your exact body measurements.

Next step,  you will design some kind of  an “internal frame”  and or  some way,  to have this “body-copy” of yourself, set-up  on a  sturdy and substantial  stand, so you will be able to  drape material around it, and design your own clothes.

Well,  that was just  too much work and time  to waste,   for me. So, I just put that “box” back into the store bag, that it came from, and took  the package back to the store.

Looking at everything in the Sewing Department, regarding “dummies”  I was Lucky to find a perfect adjustable “dummy’” on a stand, all  of it’s own.  Each part and section of the body could be moved,  through inside changes of this “body form.”  So as, to   the “if and when” you gain weight and or lose,  or even if you decide to make clothes for someone else, you could do so.  All done  and so easy for whatever size garment.

If you can “DREAM IT”  then,  you can “DESIGN IT”   for a perfect “FIT”  for each and every individual person.

So with the credit applied from the old and obsolete  “do-it yourself-dummy” –   I was off and running with a perfect ‘me’ dummy,  one that has it’s own stand, adjustable for height, and the insides to be adjusted to whatever the tape measured of ‘me’ .  Everything  is changeable,  if and when needed, and  or even when I make something special for someone else.

That is ‘ME’ in the above PHOTO,  with my exact size “Dummy”  and,  so many years ago. That poor ole  ‘DUMMY’  went with “ME to FLORIDA”  and  has made every move  with me. Good ole “Dummy” always stood up, was always ready for something special to be thrown at it.

My “Dummy”  now has a “face” – a head with hair  also  a dress and cape, all just for effect,  and is always standing  near by, just having  a  regular place in my sewing world,  just  as if  or like everyone’s favorite  and best friend!   Forever!

“NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE’S DAY”

NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE’S DAY – July 26

NATIONAL AUNT AND UNCLE’S DAY – July 26

National Aunt and Uncle’s Day on July 26th honors a special set of relatives we look up to throughout our lives. During holidays, family events and sometimes sleepovers, aunts and uncles often hold an extraordinary place in our hearts. They fill our lives with fun, laughter, love and incredible memories.

This holiday provides an opportunity to spend time with our parents’ siblings we trusted and leaned on growing up.  It would be an excellent time to get out the old photo albums. Look through the pictures, and relive the memories of earlier days around the Christmas tree or at the 4th of July picnic or maybe at the beach vacation that included those special aunts and uncles in your life. Get together with your relatives and create new memories. Remind them of all the reasons you enjoy having them in your life. Celebrate the lessons they’ve taught you and share them with the next generation.

Another way to celebrate the day is by documenting family memories and history. Aunts and uncles hold many memories of growing up with our parents annd our grandparents. Sharing their stories and recording them for future generations will be a worthwhile endeavor. One way to record those stories is through StoryCorps.org.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Take the day to contact your aunts and uncles. Remember all the value they’ve added to your life and tell them about it. Share a meal, write them a note, help them the way they once supported you. Take photos with them and post them on social media using #AuntAndUnclesDay

HISTORY

“The LIFE of RILEY – Bill and Irene”

After all  these past years, at last,  a photo at home,  and resting with company!  “LOOKS LIKE THE LIFE OF  RILEY”  – – to me??

img037

After having supper,  back in the day,  the  “MAN”   of the house,  in his  easy chair and reading the day’s newspaper, with  “company sitting around”  all  nice, cozy  and comfortable,  and “DEAR”  wife,  finally comes into the living room, having  just finished the evening dishes,  all nicely clean and put away.

NOW,  gives notice that,  there is a nice “home made dessert”  ready and waiting to be served,  just  as soon as everyone is ready,  for more  “good eats!”

That  is  our “AUNT Irene” on the left,  and the man of the house,  “UNCLE  William B. Riley”   reading  the news of the day.

So now,  before it gets too late, “AUNT  Irene”  will start to serve  something very special,   for this  special  night’s dessert,   since the  “company is FAMILY!”

Did you check out the first posted photo of  our “Aunt Irene and Uncle Bill” way back and when, I do not think that they changed too much, what do you think?

“Just in case, you could not find – check this out, for the good ole days  – early “1900’s”

“BILL and IRENE RILEY – Memory”

Here is  the young  “RILEY’s”   as we all have seen  episodes    of   “The LIFE of RILEY”   well,  just a  big  maybe  “they,  the  “Riley”  couple sitting  here, on their back porch”  were  maybe used as the typical role model?

I am wondering and thinking,   as to just exactly,  “WHY the NAME  of the RILEY’s?”   Did they use their first  names, “BILL and IRENE, or  did  they have another couple to patteren after, and did  they even know  “HOW” they  would react to each other, what was so speciasl about “RILEY”   that would entertain,   the whole wide world!

“NATIONAL AMELIA EARHART DAY”

NATIONAL AMELIA EARHART DAY – July 24

Each year on July 24th, National Amelia Earhart Day honors the achievements of the aviation pioneer on the date of her birth.

Author and American aviation pioneer, Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897.  One of Earhart’s most impressive achievements took place on May 20th, 1932. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo flight across the Atlantic. He flew from New York to Paris in 33 hours and 30 minutes.

Earhart took off from Grace Harbor, Newfoundland four years to the day Lindbergh completed his flight. Throughout the flight, she faced many technical difficulties. Her goal was to land in Paris, France. The previous year, Ruth Nichols attempted to fly solo across the Atlantic. Had she succeed, she would have been the first woman to do so. However, Nichols’ crashed while attempting to land for refueling in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia.

Due to Earhart’s challenges in flight, she landed the red Lockheed Vega 14 hours and 16 minute later in Derry, Ireland. All in all, the flight was a success. She became the first woman pilot to complete the journey. Following Earhart’s record-setting accomplishment, she earned the United States Distinguished Flying Cross.

More Earhart Facts
  • Earned many other records
  • Wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences
  • Instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines (an organization for female pilots)
  • Joined the Purdue University aviation department faculty in 1935 as a visiting faculty member to counsel women on careers and help to inspire others with her love for aviation.
  • Member of the National Woman’s Party
  • Supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment

In 1937, Earhart attempted to circumnavigate the globe. Her Purdue-funded Lockheed Model 10 Electra disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean near Howland Island in July.

Each year on July 24th, National Amelia Earhart Day honors the achievements of the aviation pioneer on the date of her birth. Today, her successes continue to inspire women around the globe to the world of aviation.

Fascination with her life, career, and disappearance continues to this day. A recently discovered photograph has renewed interest in her disappearance and possible survival as a Japanese prisoner.  Whether or not the mystery will ever be solved remains to be seen.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate National Amelia Earhart Day by researching and reading more about this famous female aviator. Add to your research other women aviation pioneers that led the way such as Bessie Coleman and Louise Thaden. Cast your doubts or share your wonder by using #AmeliaEarhartDay on social media.

“WHO is WHO at the  Saint Louis ZOO”

JULY 24, 2019 | NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY – July 24

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

National Cousins Day on July 24th recognizes the lifelong relationships that grow among cousins. Our first friendships often form with cousins as young as infants and endure a lifetime.

Whether cousins grow up together in close-knit families or only see each other occasionally, they share shared memories through grandparents, aunts, and uncles. At family gatherings, cousins entertain each other and get into trouble together, too.  They celebrate birthdays and might even blow out the other’s candles to their cousin’s annoyance. When their siblings irritate them, cousins become an ally. Sometimes cousins seem more like siblings, especially if they’re only children.

As cousins grow up, watching their children grow reminds them of their youth. The cycle starts over.

The day celebrates every age of cousins – new baby cousins and cousins whose babies are all grown up!

HOW TO OBSERVE

Gather up your cousins and take a photo. Send a text to your cousins who are too far away. If you need to hear their voices, give them a call. Reminisce over the good times. Be sure to laugh about those things that didn’t seem so funny at the time.  Post photos on social media using #NationalCousinsDay.

“Celebrate with all of your Cousins – TODAY!”
