“NATIONAL FAMILY DAY”

NATIONAL FAMILY DAY – Fourth Monday in September

On the fourth Monday in September, National Family Day encourages everyone to gather around the table and enjoy a meal together.

The old saying goes, “Families who eat together, stay together,” but did you know they may also be reducing the risk of addiction? According to the National Center on Addiction, families who eat three or more meals a week together reduce a teen’s risk of using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

That’s a fantastic outcome on its own. Family bonding is just a bonus. However, there are more benefits. For example, families who eat together also learn healthy eating habits, eat smaller portions, and are less likely to stress about food.

And back to the bonding – when parents engage with their children over a meal, their relationships are better. They learn responsibility while helping to prepare the meal and cleaning up. Children feel like they are a part of a unit, a team. They connect with the people who mean the most to them and who know them the best. Parents become and remain the people they turn to when the significant problems crop up.

Look forward to conversations about grades, dating, borrowing the car, and moving away. Don’t forget the debates about politics. Our children won’t always agree with us – and that’s ok. Why? Because we raise them to be independent thinkers and to express themselves effectively. These conversations start at a dinner table. They shouldn’t begin when our children’s world turns upside down.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalFamilyDay

Have a meal with your family. It doesn’t have to be fancy. But it does have to include food and your family. Gather everyone and set the table. Talk to each other. Find out about everyone’s day. Then, commit to having another meal together before the week is out. Take a family photo and share it using #NationalFamilyDay.

Educators and families, visit the National Day Calendar Classroom for fun ways to Celebrate Every Day!

NATIONAL FAMILY DAY HISTORY

The National Center on Addiction declared National Family Day in 2001 as a way to combat substance abuse among teens. Their research showed that teens who ate meals with their families were less likely to fall into substance abuse. They also tend to do better in school and eat healthier.

“Some good old Memories remembered again Today”

Sometimes remembering the good ole days… includes an old photo of you and your classmates.

The next thought is… wondering where, each and all of your friends and classmates for several years at St. Vincent’s’ are today?

My thought is… everyone starts something different and  that leads them to new cities and places in the world, and before everyone has found a new niche in this world to call HOME … just keeping track and staying in communication … with our old friends… back then… new and better ways of keeping in touch were needed and also  brought up to date.

Communications  back in the day… if you, were not there back then… good,  as  we did not have the ways of really keeping in touch with each other… as we now… do have!

L to R  – Front row – Mary Agnes – Jeanne – Theresa – Violet

Taking this picture is Betty Jean…

“Elma and Eleanor” … would make the rest of our class mates… and were not around at the time we  were taking a few photos.

and then… we had a bike… back in the old times.

Denny & bike 001

“Well…it looks like I will be just standing here and posing… by the time Mary Ellen gives me the “OKAY” to ride.

I’ll have to turn in for the night, here!”

“You know when you have an older, sister,  you feel like… they must be some kind of a teacher…  did you ever listen to some older… “sister’s”  –

It seems  as if…  they were just born with a whole bunch of  “HOW TO   DO’s …  this and that…  and  really…  what do they know more than the next guy???”

“I know, that some day I will get to ride this… here,  old bike!”

“If I can keep telling myself “… “someday it will be safe to ride this old bike … but, WHEN???”

Me on bike 001

It was nice,  when my DAD had his old “Jalopy” …  without it I guess,  that I never would have seen this bike?

There were also the times when my Dad brought other stuff… out to this HOME …  and we would get to share it with all the other kids.

The one time I remember in the “SUMMER”  …  and boy o-boy was it ever FUN …  we all had “WATERMELON” … all the KIDS …  kept coming back for more and more slices… that was the best time for everybody…

It is really good to have some very good memories of the time when we all were younger and everything and every day was a new learning lesson… always growing… for the rest of of our LIVES!

“NATIONAL DUMPLING DAY”

NATIONAL DUMPLING DAY – September 26

National Dumpling Day on September 26th serves up a delicious treat to celebrate. With the popularity of dumplings growing all the time, the day offers a great way to celebrate! Whether enjoyed as an appetizer or the main course, each morsel satisfies.

Dumplings offer so much variety and flavor. They create a beautiful accompaniment to any meal, too. The endless possibilities of shape and taste make dumplings a favorite dish around the world.

Dumplings consist of small pieces of dough. Generally, but not always, the dough is wrapped around a filling. Both flavor and cooking methods factor into the wide variety of dumplings available, too. The dough may be composed of flour, potatoes, or bread. The fillings come in many forms – meat, fish, vegetables, or sweets. Dumplings can be cooked in many different ways, too. Some of the methods include boiling, steaming, simmering, and even frying. While dumplings are often eaten on their own, they are a delicious addition to soups and stews, too.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDumplingDay

Serve an entire meal of dumplings. Start with appetizers and follow them with a soup course. Then serve the main course. Wrap it up with a sweet dessert. Other suggested ways to celebrate include:

  • Invite friends to join you at your favorite restaurant. Order a variety of dumplings to share. Don’t forget to give the restaurant a shout-out on social media.
  • Experiment at home. Try cultural recipes or break the mold by adding your own flair.
  • Add dumplings to soups.
  • Share your favorite recipes.
  • Don’t forget to take photos of your plates – before and after!

Be sure to invite friends to enjoy the celebration with you! Take photos and post them on social media using #NationalDumplingDay.

“September 25th the Best Day of the Year”

Today … we all remember  “MAMA” on September 25th.

This message is from ME… just sitting here and thinking of you on your Birthday!

1944 ME 001

This next picture is ME, just sa couple years later and as you can see…  my mouth is moving… guess what…

“I am singing “Happy Birthday to you …  dear MOM and  you are just the best of Mothers’ a child could have ever had”

Poodle skirt 001

“Just have to add the rest of the family… as I am taking this PHOTO of You, “MOM” and Daddy and with my brothers Tommy and Denny.”

This  just happens to be one of those Photos from the good ole days so long ago.

The best thing about this photo is that you all,  are looking good with a smile… that is hard to keep from showing… I can see you are all so HAPPY!

I took this 001

For your BIRTHDAY… I have added a surprise photo of your seven older brothers… there are some  markings on the photo, with their names  (kind of  very lite writing…  so that I would know who is who) and with some of their friends,  all  are enjoying… sitting in front of the “BRADY Tavern” … this photo was taken in the late 1800’s….

001

“Don’t you … just love the way  young gentlemen dressed back then…I just love seeing how well dressed my uncles were and the stories of them and what they all  did back then!”

“Sending a big….Happy Birthday …. from all of us!”

“To You…MOM,  Today…”

“Luck of the IRISH, MOM’s Birthday today”

“Little Marie Brady… BIRTHDAY…TODAY”

Number… 13… is LUCKY – – for some people?

Would   “YOU” consider being LUCKY … if you were the…  “13th”   child to be born in an IRISH FAMILY?

Here sits “Little Marie” with a very surprised look…  probably wondering… “What in the world is all of this   commotion  for?”

“I’m sitting here… all dressed up like (Lady/Mrs.) Astor’s pet horse”   and only  being the second girl in the BRADY FAMILY and also  fifteen years younger…  than older sister, Irene.

What a LIFE …  it  has already been mapped out.

Two of “Little Marie’s” older brothers were already married ,  and when  a FAMILY with lots of cousins,  so many were thinking that surely … this  ‘new baby’  has to be one  of the older sons’ …  surely …Mrs. T.F. BRADY is  ‘too old’  to still be having more children?

But in those days… lots of children… meant wealth …  and you may have to be wealthy,  since…  that is a lot of mouths to be fed.

With all the history of the “SMART-BRADY” Family… no one really knows  exactly why we all  are a part of a much bigger “plan” that was destined  for our LIFE here on  Earth.

But –  it is our duty to find…  seek and search out the “TRUTH” in this LIFE …  and what is the ultimate  “PLAN” for believers… to follow?

When one stops to think … about LIFE – – “Your very OWN LIFE” –  there are lots of roads… leading to places that seem so right… but…  one must “STOP in their tracks” …  and take some time to investigate  where does all of this lead me…  to what end will I find  in TIME  and  is that the “reward” that was promised by our CREATOR?

Am I  on that narrow path that may be difficult at times and  hard at  other  times  here and there…  but with the TRUTH …  we just must continue on with the good  WORD.

“Happy Birthday to the best  “MOM”  – – I know YOU are in Heaven”

“NATIONAL ONE-HIT WONDER DAY”

NATIONAL ONE-HIT WONDER DAY – September 25

On September 25th, National One-Hit Wonder Day brings back memories while turning up the volume. We honor all the musical artists and chart-topping songs that make them memorable.

These songs make us sing whether we should or not. We know all the words even though we don’t know why. They’re the songs groups of friends will burst out in chorus together and make memories, too. Movie soundtracks love them. Wedding dances love them. We all love them!

The real kicker is, the artists or groups only made us swoon once. After that, they faded away. Some continued with moderate success. Others, however, were never heard of again, musically.

Listed below are just a few of the well-known one-hit wonders from days gone by.

  • 1955 – “Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)” by The Penguins
  • 1963 – “Six Days on the Road” by Dave Dudley
  • 1968 – “Tip Toe Thru The Tulips” by Tiny Tim
  • 1969 – “Smile a Little Smile for Me” by The Flying Machine
  • 1970 – “One Tin Soldier” by The Original Caste
  • 1970 – “The House of the Rising Sun” by Frijid Pink
  • 1972 – “Hot Rod Lincoln” by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen
  • 1983 – “Puttin’ on the Ritz” by Taco
  • 1988 – “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin

Do any of these bring back memories?
