“Received the very Best of Thanksgiving Gifts”

This is the very best of surprises for a very Happy Thanksgiving… that I could receive.

When my Grandson Alan came over for Thanksgiving, he had a very large package for me… from his mother, Mary.

When I finished opening the package… this is what I received.

Just look at the beautiful “Baby Quilt” that  Mary had made.

The story of this prize goes back for many many years.

My Mother had several projects that she was going to complete, but having six children, she never got to finish and or have the time, to do what she had alwys wanted and intended to do.

When I was in High School…Television was so new, that very few people owned one and were used to using their free time in doing more creative things… such as making things that could be used as gifts and or for your own household.

About this baby quilt, I did find this package of squares and threads to be used and took the time to do the embroidery work… and did only these squares. I was not too sure of how to complete the quilt as a project so wrapped up the finished squares, and worked on other projects that MOM had.

So… talking to my daughter in law, Mary about these squares… as she was telling me  about some quilting work that she was doing… and so… I just gave these squares to her,  and if she felt there was something that she could do… she was going to try.

Well… this was the best of  “THANKSGIVING DAYS”  ever, in my life time!

When I opened the package that my Grandson Alan brought over for me… it was just unbelievable to see this wonderful creation…. all put together and quilted with a nice amount of warmth in-between… someone in the family is going to receive a most  wonderful gift for a new born baby.

“May the Almighty Yahweh richly bless Mary for all of  her wonderful work she creates for those …  those who would like to do… but just can not without the proper skills… which are needed!”

“Today of ALL DAYS, Count Your Blessings”

When I’m worried and I can’t sleep,

I count my blessings instead of sheep.

And I fall asleep counting my blessings.

When my bankroll is getting small,

I think when I had none at all.

And I fall asleep counting my blessings.

and…

and…

and…

This song is one of twelve original songs Irving Berlin wrote for the 1942 film “Holiday Inn,” which also included “White Christmas,” the best-selling single of all time.

In this film, the main character Jim, played by Bing Crosby, has given up a life in show business to work on his farm.

He decides to turn the farm into a country inn, open only for holidays.

As he goes through his first year at the Holiday Inn, we hear songs for each season, all through the lens of Jim’s romantic and professional struggles.

By Thanksgiving, he is depressed and lonely, having lost his sweetheart. He has been asked to write a song for a film about his Holiday Inn, which we hear as “I’ve Got Plenty To Be Thankful For.”

This song is quite chipper compared to his mood, and as we hear the song in the movie, Jim has a negative comment to answer every positive notion in the song.

Fortunately for Jim (and the viewer!), shortly after Thanksgiving, Jim makes it back to his love and we get a happy Hollywood ending.

I’ve got plenty to be thankful for I haven’t got great big yacht To sail from shore to shore Still I’ve got plenty to be thankful for I’ve got plenty to be thankful for No private car, no caviar No carpet on my floor

Still I’ve got plenty to be thankful for I’ve got eyes to see with, ears to hear with Arms to hug with, lips to kiss with Someone to adore

How could anybody ask for more?

My needs are small, I buy ’em all At the five and ten cent store

Oh, I’ve got plenty to be thankful for I’ve got eyes to see with, ears to hear with Arms to hug with, lips to kiss with Someone to adore

How could anybody ask for more?

My needs are small, buy ’em all Five and ten cent store

Oh, I’ve got plenty to be thankful for

“Giving Thanks for our many Blessings…  for Today and Always”

“The Incredible Story of America’s First Pop Star”

Scott Joplin – 1868

While his exact birth date is unknown, the prolific ragtime composer and singer earned him the title of “King of Ragtime.”

His most popular composition, Maple Leaf Rag, also brought him a steady income until the end of his young life.

John Storgion
I wrote a 25 page research paper on Scott Joplin in high school.
His story is absolutely unbelievable, and you did a wonderful job showing the importance of his legacy!
His home is actually still preserved as a national historic landmark in St. Louis, Missouri.

Shane Wright
Before his death, Joplin told Wilbur Sweatman, one of the early superstars of Jazz (still then called Jas) and a devoted fan that he could have have all of Joplin’s notes and manuscripts to do with them what he would.
It’s due to the dedication Sweatman, who died in 1961, and his daughter, that the bulk of the information we have on Joplin including, I believe, the complete score for Treemonisha.
Aside from his devoted curatorship of Joplin’s music, Sweatman had an incredible and fascinating career that saw him become, arguably, the first African American artist with a nationwide fan base based almost entirely on record sales.
He was also a fantastic clarinet player, suffice to say.
Autonomous Collective
I once started playing “The Entertainer” on the piano.
My little daughter came out of her room, all excited.
“It’s the ice cream truck song!”

Gordon Dell
I’ve been saying for a very long time now that if I ever wrote a doctoral thesis, it would be on how Joplin was arguably the single most influential composer on popular music of the twentieth century.
His influence can be felt in every modern genre.
Excellent video and many thanks for making it.

Adam Palm
Scott Joplin is the only composer from the USA recognized worldwide as being as important as the likes of Mozart, etc.

Daniel Gomez
I guess Ragtime music, is the type of music that is instrumental but with really catching up Beats, that form a tune or song.
And I guess when Ragtime music caught up with different people in America, that play that type of instrumental music on a horn session, jazz, the piano, hoedown classical anything like that during the turn of the century.
All of it later came together as pop music.
I also do believe that Opera also played an important role as a another form to develop pop music in the early days

“Have the very BEST of Thanksgiving DAYS”

                    “We are getting ready!”

img138

Of all the places to  WORK… the above photo shows a small area of the BAKERY… and that is Sister Augustella…one NUN…  who everyone enjoyed working for… and would WORK …24/7… if that was a choice.

This photo is from the … Anniversary Edition …I would have  to check the correct year …where I have an old copy – – and I am so glad to have   this once in a LIFE-TIME  EDITION… all of the old photos,  from the years when I was there… just to show… how things were…way back and when!

Sister Augustella would have a large “laundry  size” basket  – just full of the treats… that we would get at “RECESS TIME” – – in the morning and afternoon RECESS times – – and that would be a basket for the GIRL’s side and also a basket for the BOY”s side – – and that was a real treat for each of us to be able to get something …extra sweet!

We did not go to the BAKERY… as you see in this photo… as Sister Augustella and her workers were  always busy “baking” and there was no room for interruptions –   as you see all those loaves of bread!

Back then… when I was the size of some of those girls in that photo line…

I would work in the BAKERY – – and one of the jobs that I had… was putting those loaves of bread in the bread slicer.

Then …one or two girls would spread each  slice of bread  with “HOME-made  grape jam”… which was also made  from the grape vineyard on the Orphanage grounds – – and we also had “HOME-made Apple-butter” – from the green apple trees… also growing on the Orphanage grounds.

When you think back… these jobs that we had when we were very young…were very  good training for all of the things that you may consider doing when you are older and would have left the Orphanage.

As … we all need to work at some point in LIFE – – and what better way is there …than for young children to learn how to develop skills in a variety of   occupations…

So as to get an idea of the  type of work – – which  would be of a benefit in more ways than… one can think of – – the motivation factor in determining  – – what are our  natural talents  – – will they maybe provide the exact “road” in our LIFE… to pursue!

When it comes to this time of the year…Thanksgiving TIME…

Just having had the chance to work in the BAKERY , with and for Sister Augustella,  has been of a great benefit to me.

As now, that I think back…  I have such good memories of getting ready for these  special HOLIDAYS… and I sure do enjoy telling everyone, the  how and why, of all that,  I do…  and what I do – – since everyday of my LIFE… just seems… that each  and every day, way back then… was a learning lesson… just  preparing  me… for the next day and year!

… Remember to have the very best “Thanksgiving  DAY, this  year”… as our World…  as we know it TODAY… is always changing !   We just never know … what  our tomorrows…  will bring to each of us? …
