“What is YOUR Story about losing WEIGHT”

“Wait” “Weight” or “WHAT?”

Well…it is NOW almost the end of JANUARY…

SO…WHAT are you doing???

What promises did you make to yourself?

So far… how are you doing in the RESOLUTION DEPARTMENT???

Did  you do  “WHAT”  you said  to yourself … that which you made such a firm commitment to be doing, to achieve that which, you need to do … to make “you”… you know who… “yourself ” a  much  healthier   person???

I was remembering something in my past… working in our restaurant… and you know, when it is your restaurant…

someone,  will always stop in your office and ask if you would like to try some new  fantastic  dish of food…

describing it…   just so that…

all you can and or will  say…

“Yes..   I’ll take a small taste.”

continuing…

The restaurant that we first had in Fort Lauderdale, Florida was right next door to a Doctor Hart’s office and directly across the street from the Broward General Hospital…and of course…  all along the street down from us more Doctor Offices.

So… with all of  the Doctor Offices around…there came a day that I was not feeling too well, and went to the Doctor Hart’s office…

since it was so close to us.

After being examined…was telling the Doctor… that I would like to drop a few pounds… if there was some way to do it … and  if  it would be  easy???

The Doctor said to me… “The best way to loose a few  of those extra pounds…is to just stop eating a few  of  those  extra pieces of pie…that I see you eating.”

I was shocked,  to hear him say that – –  “he sees me eating a piece of pie.”

So… I had to quiz him on that statement.

Dr. Hart then said… from the side of my building…  which is facing your building…. it is very easy to see into  the Restaurant windows, and across the front of your business…  since your business is set back…  since your customer parking lot is in font – –

and …  when you are walking around with a small plate and fork in hand…

it would seem to me… that you  are having “something sweet to eat.”

Sometimes… one has to stop an give what they just heard a second thought or two.

BUT… Dr. Hart did continued with his story, saying…

“When my practice was in CHICAGO… in a very tall building… there was a fairly upset woman in to see me several times… and each and every time she gave me her word,  that she was avoiding  all sweets…

just so that she could loose some weight…

but, NOW  needed pills… as she was not having any luck?”

“With a  few minutes to spare” – said,  the Doctor… that he was going to give me the proof of the pudding in this “weight gain case” as now he said…

“I thought that I had a few minutes… so I waited about five minutes… left my office taking the elevator down to the main floor…and there was a large restaurant in our building,  and a very nice lunch counter on the side area… and  “just” who,  do you think was sitting there?”

With that question… I answered…”the patient?”

“You guessed right” – “there she was  and had just been served a piece of pecan pie  and a cup of coffee.”

“I just had to go and take the seat next to her” – she looked to see “WHO” sat  down, next to her… when she saw that it was me…

immediately got up… leaving the pie and coffee… did not say a word… must have turn  all shades of red,  so embarrassed…  just to see me… and would you believe,  that she never came back to my office.

So… I know it is hard to loose weight – but  since that happened…

I do not believe all  the stories  that  “I hear”  about  people doing without sweets!”

“NATIONAL FLORIDA DAY”

NATIONAL FLORIDA DAY - January 25

National Florida Day on January 25th recognizes the 27th state to join the United States.

The Sunshine State is home to the oldest established city in the country. With over 400 years of history, St. Augustine’s streets and colonial architecture have stories to tell. Founded by Spanish explorers in 1565, visit the city and walk in the same footsteps as 16th-century bishops, ponder the escapades of pirates and the whereabouts of lost gold and learn about the lives of European settlers.

East and West Florida became the 14th and 15th British Colonies after the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. However, in 1783, after the end of the American Revolutionary War, The Treaty of Paris returned Florida to Spain.

The present-day borders of Florida were absorbed through two transactions: The Louisianna Purchase in 1803 brought East Florida with it (but not without dispute from the French) and through a U.S. intervention in an uprising in West Florida in 1812 causing West Florida to join the Mississippi Territory. Florida joined the Union on March 3, 1845.

Sun and Space

With an average high temperature of 79.5°F, it should be no surprise that Floridian John Gorrie brought refrigeration and air conditioning to the world in 1851. Add to that, more than half the year with partly cloudy to sunny days, the invention of sunblock would be a necessity, too. Hungary born pharmacist, Benjamin Green, invented a sunscreen in 1944 which later became a tanning lotion known as Coppertone.

Cape Canaveral and the home of the Kennedy Space Center in Brevard County has come a long way from its first launch in 1950. From Appollo missions to Hubble Telescopes and Mars Rovers, Cape Canaveral continues missions well into the future. Missions include commercial ventures including SpaceX launches.

Florida offers more than enough to do and see. From man-made worlds and relaxing beaches to long, colorful and intricate history, the Sunshine State’s open spaces and sunny faces require more than one visit.

A civil rights activist and composer, James Weldon Johnson became United States consul to Puerto Cabello in Venezuela under President Theodore Roosevelt. He is also noted for composing the song Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Founder of the first African-American union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, A. Philip Randolph was considered a trailblazing union leader and social activist.

A sculptor of considerable talent, Augusta Savage built a career sculpting busts of notable African Americans. In 1939, she earned a commission for the New York World’s Fair. Her piece, The Harp, depicted men, women, and children forming a harp in the arm of God. Inspired by James Weldon Johnson’s composition Lift Every Voice and Sing, the piece was destroyed along with all the other commissioned pieces for the fair as there were no funds to cast the works.

Strange Fruit (1944) and Killers of the Dream (1949) placed Lillian Smith’s stance on civil rights squarely in the public eye, right where she wanted it to be. Throughout Smith’s life, she continued to dedicate her writing to the Civil Rights Movement.

Jacqueline Cochran was the first woman pilot to break the sound barrier.

The career of award-winning rock and roller, Tom Petty, spanned four decades, several bands and successful solo albums. Notable solo hits like “Free Fallin’” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” were backed by Traveling Wilburys bandmates Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison.

The first woman to serve as the United States Attorney General, Janet Reno was appointed to the office in 1993 by President William Clinton. She served until 2001.

Betty Mae Tiger Jumper devoted her entire career to public service. As a nurse, she worked to improve the health and conditions in the Seminole community. In 1967, Tiger Jumper was elected the first woman tribal leader of the Florida Seminoles and the first woman to lead a federally recognized tribe. In 1971, she left office to carry on the publishing of the Seminole Tribune which Tiger Jumper launched in 1950.

Sidney Poitier began his acting career on stage filling in for Harry Belafonte. Making his way to Hollywood, Poitier became the first African American to earn an Academy Award for his role in Lilies of the Field.

As part of Project Excelsior in 1960, Joseph Kittinger leaped from a balloon gondola at the far reaches of Earth’s atmosphere. Breaking world records that still stand today for the highest parachute jump and a freefall that lasted 4 minutes and 36 seconds, Captain Kittinger’s feats proved multistage survival possible at various altitudes and under certain conditions. With advancing technologies in aviation, these experiments helped to provide valuable data.

Winner of the Nobel Prize in physics in 2006, George Smoot is an experimental astrophysicist. Smoot led the team that mapped the early universe.

“Happy Birthday Denny” “The Best of ALL”

Message regarding the hats for Tommy and Denny… from Denny’s wife Judy is…

“A friend of Tom’s made these hats for the two of them.

I thought they looked a bit like toilet paper covers.”

When you look at this PHOTO of “Tommy and Denny”  you are looking at the map of IRELAND!

Our Grandfather Thomas Brady… gave to his descendants… that which all of  us enjoy…  our telling  all the world,   all about “IRELAND” and what a wonderful place it tis … especially when you can say you have roots in “IRELAND” and can celebrate all across the world on the 17th of March!

He gave to us a piece of his land “IRELAND” with all the “GREEN”  that we can get our hands on.

The reason for the the “GREEN” is that it looks so good… the Greenland and the green color in any kind of clothing you want to wear… especially in a “GREEN TAM” which just promotes the wearer to shine with a lovely warm smile to all  the wonderful people, that want to hear a marvelous story… as only a good “Irishman” can tell.

The Lemon Pipers – Green Tambourine -1968

“Green Tambourine” is about a street musician pleading for someone to give him money.

In exchange he offers to play his green tambourine.

It’s… by… written, composed and produced by Paul Leka and Shelley Pinz.

It was the biggest hit by the 1960s Ohio-based rock group The Lemon Pipers.

“Green Tambourine” peaked high in many charts: #1 US Billboard Hot100 and Canadian RPM 100; #3 Australia and New Zealand; #6 South Africa Springbok; #7 Switzerland and UK; #9 Dutch Top40; #10 in Germany.

“7 Health Myths About Winter”

7 Health Myths About Winter

by Ashley Lateef

Every winter, rumors swirl about how the cold weather can affect people. Some of these ideas have become so ingrained people believe they are true even though they have no factual evidence. Separate the facts from the fiction with these winter health myths.

Myth: You shouldn’t go for that morning run in the winter.

Health myths about Winter: You shouldn’t go for that morning run in the winter. man on a morning run. better living health wellness

Research shows that running in icy weather cannot make you sick. In fact, the real causes of illness involve staying inside and close contact with infected people. Cold weather actually might activate your immune system, increasing your norepinephrine, a hormone that works as a natural decongestant.

Myth: Skip the sunscreen.

Although the weather tends to be overcast in the winter, up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays can still penetrate the clouds, according to The Skin Cancer Foundation, Ultraviolet (UVA) rays are always present—even in winter—and they can damage the deeper layers of your skin, increasing your risk for skin cancer and causing skin to age prematurely. So make sure to lather up before your ski trip.

Myth: The flu shot will give you the flu.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu shots are made with either an inactive form of the virus or no flu virus at all. Neither type can give you the flu. Although you may still get the flu even if you’ve had a flu shot, the shot isn’t responsible for the sickness.

Myth: Winter causes hair loss.

Winter can, actually, help you retain and “save” your hair. University Hospital of Zurich conducted a six-year study finding that most women lost more hair in summer than in winter.

Myth: Cold air makes you sick.

Many people believe that cold and flu become more common as the temperature falls. Research shows that, despite what your mom has told you, simply existing in cold weather isn’t, itself, likely to make you get sick. According to Consumer Reports, exposing one’s skin to cold temperatures does not have an effect for getting sick.

Myth: Using hand sanitizer will keep you virus-free.

Health myths about Winter: Using Hand Sanitizer will keep you virus-free. Mother squeezing hand sanitizer on son's hands. better living health wellness

Hand sanitizer will kill most viruses, but not all. According to CNN, bacteria “can adapt to alcohols and other ingredients found in disinfectants”. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state the the most effective way to reduce germs is the traditional soap and water route. But don’t throw away your hand sanitizer just yet! The CDC also found that if you have a disinfectant that contains at least 60% alcohol you should be good to go.

“Brother Denny was a World Wide Traveler”

Brother Denny …    will be celebrating his BIRTHDAY January 24th, and since he is now in Heaven… just thought that this would be a good Photo of our younger brother, since this was taken a few years ago.

When one is traveling around the world… there is the need to take a bath.

Well… when you are going to a new city and or country… one should check the accommodations …

In Alaska…do they really think… that this size of a bathtub is adequate for all sizes of men?

Denny is posing in the bathtub in our hotel room in Anchorage.  Tom just had to take the photo.

A good laugh was had by all.

Looks like the best LAUGHING was done by brother, Denny, himself

“Denny’s Birthday will be HERE…real soon”

“Greetings and BIRTHDAY Wishes to…

DENNY McClarren, Jr.”

When you take time to remember someone – WHAT is the “one” the “one” most remarkable…  “thing”  –  that,  you will always remember with LOVE?

DEN & ME 001

         “Just the best smile ever!”

Just looking at this PHOTO… reminds me to let everyone  –   focus on taking as many PHOTOS as is possible  –  and at all stages of LIFE.

You may be  young and ask, “Why take so many PHOTOS?”  “Why would someone want too!?

There will come a day… when,  you are older and grey – and   you  would like to show your children and grand-children  what you looked like,  when you were young.

When you are seen older looking  – with  some white and or grey hair  –  maybe even a little on the “bent over on the back  side”  due to operations – and you no longer move in a hurry –  and all  that you can say,  “There will come a day when you, too  –  will look and feel like I do, NOW!”

“BUT”…WHEN,  you can sit down with the youngsters –  and pull out a couple of boxes, and or  maybe an  old “PHOTO Albums” –   NOW,  just take the time for a real,  “Show and Tell” session –  telling all about  you, “yourself”  and all of the wonders in your world, that you were doing. The questions will be many…what was the occasion… who is that and is it someone we should know… where are they now… is it possible that we can visit them???

Something even better…  leave a “legacy” of these old and remarkable  PHOTOS adding  the best of  all, a story that they never heard before, because it is your “True Life” … who is in the photo and what they are doing and if at all possible – if there is a way to get in touch with them  – with  all of the latest of information  –  you never know – you just may have an eager historian in the FAMILY.

In the above PHOTO… my brother DENNY McClarren  came home for “Thanksgiving Holiday leave” – I had just  brought home…  a large ham – and,  just to see if it was  the very best of  hams – straight from “Krey Packing Company”  in North Saint Louis – as I was working there, then –  just had to try a couple of slices – and that,  is what I have in my hands.

But… with the excitement of the HOLIDAY SEASON – just had to give DENNY a complete up-date,  of so much  good news –  and  as I  could talk and eat  – DENNY must be thinking –  that with all of this chatter – he is not  getting a chance,  to put a word in –  so the best thing to do,  is just “SMILE” and  his “SMILE” with his beautiful red hair… looking so good –  just lets me carry on and on!

So, this is another  PHOTO –  that I am so happy to have… as it always brings back the good ole days – when the whole wide  world was on track.

LOVE DENNY –  up and on his favorite “CLOUD 9!”

https://fourgrandmas.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Denny_002.jpeg

NOW, when you leave EARTH – be sure to pick a nice fluffy “CLOUD” – and travel the easy street way – just sit back and enjoy all the LOVE and FUN of being in HEAVEN!    D.V.

Just have the very best… “HAPPY BIRTHDAY , ever and forever…to my younger brother,  “DENNY”  himself!”

xoxo  xoxo   xoxo
