“One Day… with Young TOM”

“YES… I’m still waiting for my ride – –  Sometimes I just have to wait – –  as my RIDE – – will not WAIT… for me!”

img207

“Sure is good that I have a big sister, Mary Ellen… and she   does like to cook – – – she likes to make “PAN-CAKES” – – she was making “PAN-CAKES” years ago for  – – Virgil and Ronald Struck…. they were younger than us and lived across the street.img206Before breakfast…. I do have to make myself ready for the NEW DAY – –

This is Me, myself – – just have to get each and every hair  – – in the right place – – and “YES” – – that is a CIGAR – and why would I smoke a CIGAR??? – – even I do not know why I would have thought – – that  – – that would have been the THING… to do way back and then!

img205

“OH… How can you stand there…  and call me…  so many times… I heard you the first times!”

“I will call you in about five minutes – – when…  I will be ready to eat?” “This getting up so early is wearing me out – – sure will be glad when the day comes – – and I will not have to get up … so early!”

img204

Evidently… someone did not hear the “ALARM –  CLOCK” – – so it looks  – – like I should take some PHOTOS  of little “TOMMY” – – so I can show him – – when the occasion occurs… – – just how difficult it is to get him up and out of the bed – – and follow him around – – just to be sure “TOMMY”  is able to get himself – – all ready for his ride to work.

img203

“What does some-one do… when their little brother, TOMMY – – can not hear the alarm clock ring and ring…  AND  “RING” for the over – – the  one-hundredth TIME?”

Everyone does have an “internal clock” – – but when is it that it finally kicks in and wakes us…  in TIME to get ready…  for WORK?

“Where… has my “Little Doggie”… gone?”

Like I have said … “A Photo is worth a thousand words” – – and just looking at this PHOTO of  a very young “Tom McClarren” – – well there are at least enough words  – – to make a story.

img202

In the PHOTO…. You see a very young and good looking young man – – and since this PHOTO was found in our AUNT IRENE’s prayer-book – – I can understand her special LOVE for “TOMMY” as she always called each of us by our full name.

Since our Aunt Irene’s … one and only son little Bernie was hit  by a drunken truck driver – –  this happening when “BERNIE” was only ten years of age – – almost killed Aunt Irene.

LIFE comes to each of us with  at least  – – “one hundred and one” situations – – some good and then others – – which we do need to address with a set of rules – – that only each individual can at the time… understand – – and   then…. some tines we receive “GIFTS”  so good – – that we just do not know how to figure out – – “What did we do…  to deserve this extra special  “LOVE TOKEN?”

So… In our Aunt Irene’s life – – she found that which she  thought she would never again have  –  a substitute son… in Tommy – – and so when I found her personal prayer book… after her death – – the above PHOTO of young TOMMY – – in some pages that  our  AUNT IRENE – – read daily  – – and always having this  PHOTO of TOM – – as the best substitute  for her own son, BERNIE.

Having this PHOTO of young TOMMY – – I feel was one thing that kept AUNT IRENE living – – in a healthy condition – -into her eighties – -in good shape to travel and also live in her own home – – just the way a person can do – – when they are content with the GIFTS that we receive from our CREATOR!

“Every PHOTO…has a STORY”

This is 1953… and the SUMMER TIME!

img176

Check this out…. it is in…the faces … look carwfylly  and check out Tom on the cot!

In the months of June and August – – German St. Vincent Orphanage  will celebrate on the second Sunday of those two months  with a very big PICNIC … there will be rides  including “Pony RIDES” for the children and FOOD…  all day including “Chicken Dinners”  and every kind of chance game and everyone feels LUCKY… and there are lots of WINNERS!

So… with all of that good stuff going on … why not go?

Since it did not look like…  we were all going…  that would be MOM on the swing… my little sister, Eve Karen  and  I am taking this PHOTO … so this  is why you see “THOMAS” on the cot…  in great pain and suffering…  and if you have good eyesight and this PHOTO…   has been enlarged … you can see  that TOM is not a cry baby… he would rather die… than to let you know that …  he had a serious accident on  my brand new “boy’s style  bike!”

Why do “GIRLS” have to have a “BOY’S” style bike… in case a boy  just  might  want to “take you”…  for a  ride  on your bike with the “handlebars?”

TOMMY wanted to go to the ST. Vincent’s PICNIC  as a lot of his friends would be there … and since I had a brand new “BIKE” he thought  that he should try it out… just  to  “SEE” what it will do… and  of course it would save TIME and BUS FARE  as there would be at least four (4)  BUS transfers to get there.

It is approximately six (6) miles from where we live in NORTH SAINT LOUISE to NORMANDY, Missouri! Just simply a piece of cake for a good looking and strong teenager …  no problem at all?

My brother “TOM” … should have been in…  “HOLLYWOOD” as he has everyone enjoying… everything…  wherever you are and whatever you are doing. He is the original “ENTERTAINER”. That is for as long as he is there…  the SHOW is on and everyone stays… till he lets you know the … SHOW is over!

Tom made it out to the PICNIC – safe and sound – but in TIME… TOM was showing all  of the different ways to ride a bike  and as “LUCK” would have it…  there was a soft  gravel side road …just off  of  the main road and as  in one of the turns… in this particular stunt called for… well…  “TOM and BIKE” went flying down the side area and TOM… landing on his arm… and the gravel did an unmerciful job on himself…  embedding into the arm… he had “PAIN” out of this world but… he would not let on…to the crowd…  that he was suffering! “To the High Heavens”

Nothing to do… but to cover the arm as well as he could with the sleeve of his shirt and  make excuses… starts to ride the bike home… with the PAIN  just so bad…  he did not know if he would  even make it??

When TOM arrived HOME … I could tell that something was wrong… but  Tom was no longer into FUN and GAMES…  his situation was  that  he had PAIN so bad… he did not want to upset MOM…  so nosy ME… I had to see what the arm looked like??

This was a situation for the HOSPITAL… in my books  and that is where we all had to go with TOM …  that gravel was   stuck  into the skin…  so nice and tight…  I would  not be surprised to know…  that there is still some stuck in his arm!

In those days there was only the “CITY HOSPITAL” that I knew of for emergencies… but  on the next day,  as you see in the above PHOTO…  we are all worn out.

We all had to take “TOM”  to the Hospital … going on the “BUS” … there was so much that needed to done… that we had to find resting places here and there… while the nurses and doctors worked on TOM!

The previous night at the HOSPITAL…was enough for a LIFETIME.  So…  as you can see TOM is taking it easy in the backyard…  just resting and probably hoping…  that we all will forget!  (- but not me…  the photo is a very good reminder -)
