Chat -‘N Nibble Restaurant

The second restaurant  we operated was the, Chat -‘ Nibble, in the Sears-town Shopping Center. Since we were right in the middle, we were very busy for Breakfast and the Lunch-Dinner hours.  Each day there would be a Lunch Special,  a most popular item, affordable and always high quality foods. For quick service, there was the 20 stool counter, giving you full view of ice cream sodas , and banana splits being made.

“Ruby”, was the head Chef someone that everyone knew and liked. She would make up special dishes from the customer ideas, pleasing to everyone! I also liked to be one of her favorite tasters! There was another Chef, mostly available on the late to closing shift, and she excelled in the desserts.

My Mother, always made the best Rice Pudding and Bread Pudding, since she was Irish and English, family favorites! My Grand-mother was the Best of  Best “Cook”, and these favorite puddings of  the family were of my request for the restaurant. When you have Chefs, wanting to “Please the Boss”  –  the best way  –  was “Please the Wife!”

Lucky Boy Drive-in

When your husband has a restaurant to run –  plan on doing a variety of jobs  –  you never know just when or how your service may be needed? My primary job was taking care of the books. My mother often said she could not figure out why her children all decided to do so well in math and numbers –  something she never liked?

On this particular day, one of the “Car Hops” called in , stating they were sick and could not work? Well, Lee said to call a couple of numbers, and see if anyone could fill in and in a hurry! Or ,  would I like to try out as a “Car Hop?”  So far, in my life, at that time (1960) “Car Hop” just never  ever enter my  “Brain”  –  but –  so that I could never ever say I wasn’t given a chance –  Mr. Opportunity was knocking?

Had to get one of the uniforms they wear, an order book, apron with pockets, and money for change. Caught a couple of the girls, quick questions, and off and running , there was “Mickey the Car Hop,” doing her thing!  Not too bad, worked a shift, learn something new, and took home my pocket “Full of Tips!”

Lawn Care Family pg.4

When, School started in September, Mr. Johnson the lawn service man, had one  of his sons’ starting High School. The young man  wanted to work , if possible at one of our restaurants, on weekends and a couple  of hours after school. My husband, Lee found this young man wanting to learn and do  more to make more money. Seems he wanted to save enough money, so he could buy a bike! Trying to work after school required a lot of walking,(not very good  transportation in those days), giving up a lot of hours he could be working.

So, my husband, Lee had me start looking for sales on bikes, since Christmas merchandise would soon be on the store shelves. There was a new “Super Discount Store,”  just about ready to have a “Big Sale” and “Bikes” were on our list!  Lee and I were there and ready to be some of the first shoppers, and we made a “Bee Line” right to the “Bike Department.”

We  were “Lucky” to get just the right bike, just what the young man was wanting! We did not wait till Christmas to give him the bike, we took it to the restaurant with a big “RED” bow , because this was a gift that was needed now!
