“Do This…NICE…”
While I was in the “German St. Vincent Orphanage” I worked for “Sister MARY ZITA” – – two different times…each time was for six months – – SISTER Mary ZITA” was the NUN who took care of the small children – — which we called “BABY ROOM” – – and in that part of the Orphanage…which had their own PLAY ROOM are – bath- room – and their own bed room area.
The small children that would be in the “BABY ROOM would have to be at least “two years of age” and not old enough to be in the “KINDERGARTEN” age group of children – – as they also had their own areas.
This is the BEDROOM area – – just for the “BABIES” – – – It does look like there is still some “DAY LIGHT” coming through the windows – – and you are correct … as I remember so well – going to bed so early – – as all the children went to bed at “ten after seven in the evening. The eight graders and older girls still living at the “HOME” – stayed up to “twenty-five minutes after eight… in the evening. – – – – We would all get up early to go to CHURCH – – for the daily six o’clock in the morning… MASS!
These “PHOTOS” of “SISTER MARY ZITA” are real treasures – – you did notice… that you did not see her face – – she was not the type to be anything but a quiet and more reserved type of NUN. ” SISTER was more like a SAINT – – of all of the NUNS!”
Thinking back…I may have been in the fourth grade – – when I first went to work for and with “SISTER ZITA” – – and then again in the fifth or sixth grade – – so I feel that I did get to know her fairly well. Sister did not have a lot to say… but – what I do remember is that – – no matter the conversation on how or what was to be done… “SISTER” HAD “the same ending “… AT THE END OF THE SENTENCE…..SHE WOULD ALWAYS SAY… “DO… IT nice!”

“MEMORY LANE – – 1947…”
Click on the above photo…… so you will have a better idea of “WHO is WHO?”
Sitting at the table – – front and center – – on the right side …that is “ESTER BONE” – – and it looks like she is working on one those small throw rungs… that would be used in the kitchen in front of the sink… maybe in the bathroom… or even front of an entrance door.
It would be hard for me to walk on such a prize handmade item – – if it were me that would have “WON” this throw rug – – I would hang it on the wall…for all to see and admire.
Sitting at the table – – and on the left side – – are the “WHITNEY TWINS”…”CATHERINE” and the other twin’s name … can not remember… because I was in the age range of their younger sister “PHYLLIS WHITNEY” and “PHYLLIS WHITNEY” was one of my favorite friends. The “WHITNEY TWINS” were always dressed exactly alike – – I did not study their faces… but I am guessing that they were also Identical Twins!
Along the wall of this room – – on the right side – – the girl that is… second from the front and crocheting… is “MARIE ANNA” Also, all of the items that were made by the girls…were for sale on “PICNIC DAYS” and or some of the bigger and more expensive items would be raffled off. Some of the items that – – I had made when I was there … My “Aunt Irene Brady Riley” purchased – – and NOW – – some of those items that I made – – I have…after all of these many years!
In my opinion… for us – girls – to have had the time to learn to crocket and to do embroidery work was a wonderful thing for us at that time – – as in the fast pace of time – – today – – I just do not feel that girls are learning this “ART” – – and I just do not find that anyone has the time to sit still for a couple of hours and make hand-made items – – that are “WORKS of ART!”

“Down ‘MEMORY LANE’…for RAYE in CALIFORNIA”
Since we were talking on the telephone…today – – just thought that this collage of photos – – from the “German St. Vincent’s Home” will have you maybe remembering some good old days – – some thing even special – – that may have happen… so long ago???
This page of “PHOTOS” is from the … ” 1950 – Souvenir Program” – this book does have a good number of old PHOTOS – – and what I can not figure out…is that in all the years that I was there – – I can not find any PHOTOS – – that my brothers DENNY and TOMMY or even myself… are just not shown.
As far as I can figure… is that there must have been only some special ORPHANS – that were used in the special dress up for a special time to be photographed.
Like they say… In LIFE…everyone has their own fifteen minute of FAME and FORTUNE… and being in the Orphanage – – was not to be a very special TIME for me. That must have been a TIME for a much deeper understanding …for me to learn…maybe something more substantial to the type of LIFE and the WORK …including what my FAMILY would be and their needs – – requiring something that you need … in the line of strength and to develop more FAITH in how I would be able to use those special talents and to use them to the best of my ability.
So…looking back…I think that I have done most of what I was suppose to do – and – I am still learning – – so that I can always do better.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAYE… in California – and many more…and celebrate all week – – that is the best way to have a BIRTHDAY!”
