HAPPY 239tth BIRTHDAY “OLD GLORY”
“Old Glory’’
The name “Old Glory” was first applied to the U.S. flag by a young sea captain who lived in Salem, Mass. On his twenty-first birthday, March 17, 1824, Capt. William Driver was presented a beautiful flag by his mother and a group of local young ladies. Driver was delighted with the gift. He exclaimed, “I name her ‘Old Glory.’” Then Old Glory accompanied the captain on his many voyages. Captain Driver quit the sea in 1837 and settled in Nashville, Tenn. On patriotic days, he displayed Old Glory proudly from a rope extending from his house to a tree across the street. After Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Captain Driver hid Old Glory by sewing the flag inside a comforter. When Union soldiers entered Nashville on February 25, 1862, Driver removed Old Glory from its hiding place, carried the flag to the state capitol building, and proudly raised it for all to see. Shortly before his death, the old sea captain placed a small bundle into the arms of his daughter. He said to her, “Mary Jane, this is my ship flag, Old Glory. It has been my constant companion. I love it as a mother loves her child. Cherish it as I have cherished it.” The flag remained as a precious heirloom in the Driver family until 1922. Then it was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where it is carefully preserved under glass today.
“Is… everyone celebrating – – being an AMERICAN – – and is your “OLD GLORY” flying high?”
Do Not forget to PRAY to our “ALMIGHTY” – – to give… first of all – – our Thanks for our FREEDOM – – and to continue to “BLESS AMERICA” and to give all of us the strength to learn – – that in our working… together – – that we can LIVE with JOY and HAPPINESS – – as HE created us to do – – remembering that – – “UNITED WE STAND!” – – “DIVIDED WE FALL!”

“The BABY BED is NOW…reduced!”
This is the story – – that my “MOM” told me – – so many years ago – – but – – some NEW PARENTS – – in the market to buy a “BABY BED” – – might give some thought to???
In the “furniture” market – – we know that their “mark-up” price is at least 200% and even in some cases up to 300% – — – therefore the great sale prices – – every so often – – but when there is no special sale going on – – for a HOLIDAY – – or even where they advertise – – – NOW – – today – – when I am not in the market to buy anything – – everyone knows after so many years – – you have worked and bought all the stuff that you could possibly use in a hundred years – – in fact – – NOW – – we are NOW giving extra stuff away – – “one does seem to accumulate too much!”
Back… along time a go – – when you could buy a whole meal for only “twenty-five cents” – – those were the days – – but even with the right prices – – who had a dime to spare?
So… here comes little “MARY ELLEN” – – and even after nine months – – what a surprise – – if you look at the PHOTO – – when I was first born – – “IT” sure looks as if – I am the most surprised – – NEW BORN BABY – little person to be born???
With “ME” being the FIRST – of six children – – this is where the PARENTS – – go to school – – learning how – what – where – when and let us not forget the “WHY” – – we are going to do something special for our little baby. WHEN do the parents go shopping for the “BABY BED” – and some of the other necessary items – – that you will have to have for the FIRST BABY!
I do not remember exactly HOW old I was… but – – one of the close relatives – – a cousin to the BRADY FAMILY – – did have a very good job – – at one of the tree big department stores in the downtown SAINT LOUIS area – – – – just so happens to be a “STORE BUYER” – – and in the KNOW about what a NEW BABY should have and needs – – – told my “MOM” when to come to the store and check out the “BABY FURNITURE!”
My FATHER drives my “MOM” – – and with “ME” in her arms – – to the store and they go to the department – – WHERE… the NEW BABY BEDS were on display. My PARENTS are having FUN showing me off to all the people in the store – – and at the same time looking – – at all the necessary things – – that I might need. Well… you know after awhile – – time going by – little baby will have a wet diaper – – and in those days – guess that they did not have the NEW plastic type of protective covering – – and in that case – – everything gets wet!
So… My “MOM” was directed over to the BEDS – – and someone told her – that she could set “ME” down and change the “BABY’s diaper on the bed. “WAS that a good idea or not?” In the changing of the diaper – – there is a little “WET SPOT” – – on the mattress – – so WHAT to do??? Does my “MOTHER” like this bed? Would you like it better – – – if the STORE gives you a very good discount – – since they will have to sell it – – – for less to someone?
This was a very nice “BABY BED” – – and of course the “PRICE WAS RIGHT!” It seems to me that the stores would kind of watch – – “WHO” is near the beds and “WHAT” are they about to do??? But… then “WHO” wouldn’t take a “BABY BED” … and at a much lower price!

“In the 70th year – starts 2nd Childhood!”
Did you ever hear that … “You start into your 2nd Childhood?” – – “In your seventies – – “KIRK DOUGLAS” stated that – – you begin… your second childhood – and that means – – that – – NOW – you can do all those things – that you were deprived of getting to do – – and whatever silly stuff you are doing – – “IT” is NOW – – all okay to do!”
So… when I heard that – – that was exactly something that I thought I will remember – – so that – – when I get to the age of “70” – – there will time and no complaints from anyone – – when I want to do what there was no TIME – – for me to do back then!
This is a PHOTO of me – – in my “Rosati-Kain”HIGH SCHOOL uniform – – and just to be funny – – put a “DUNCE CAP” on… and then – – to clear my hands – just threw my school cap up into the air – – and caught it on top of my “DUNCE CAP” – – just to see what – – “looking silly – really looks like?”
When I was in HIGH SCHOOL
there was a BUS strike – – and so in order for me to get to school – – I did have to ride my bike to 4300 Lindell BLVD. SAINT LOUIS – – and the miles for me – – to peddle were about three and a half. This would not have been too bad – – – but as I was riding – – had to from time to time – – make sure that my school uniform skirt was not flying too high – – so as to distract – passers-by – – – and or cause an accident – and it sure was good that we did have good weather – – because – – how else would I travel – – if there would have been RAIN???
So… as you see me in this PHOTO – – that is the way I traveled – – and with my school books and prob bally a purse somewhere – – – this is the way – – just as friendly as possible – since going through the SAINT LOUIS area – did have to cross over “STREET CAR” tracks and – – thinking back – “IT sure was a good thing that – – I was young – – and had lots of energy!”
NOW…that I am in my seventies – – I am thinking that it would be beneficial for me to get an adult “Three-Wheeler” – – and have a large attached basket – – in the rear – – for “STUFF!”
That is me with the “SCOOTER” – and of course my younger brother “TOMMY” – – and in looking at these old PHOTOS – – I can see that I have done a good job of riding the “two-wheeler” – – – and sure did use lots of leg energy – – pushing the “Scooter” around – – so – – NOW – – are you also thinking … the same thing that I am thinking???
As a person – NOW in my seventies – – – and… if… I am also in my “second childhood” – – need to keep in tune with the “TOY STYLES” of children – but – – – which would be easy for an old “bag of BONES” – – to feel comfortable riding – – and then… when taking a rest… can sit back… on – – – – and in a comfortable position – – that would be in the “sitting position” – for the legs and the whole “bag of BONES” – – some of which in my case – – have been replaced!
“What a “GOOD TIME” – – we “SENIORS” have to look forward to – – It’s that “second childhood” – – having that positive attitude in to old age – – letting us have all the FUN – – that we can!”

“My Thoughts on TWO QUOTES…”
“Keep your fears to yourself; but share your courage with others.”
“Robert Louis Stevenson
“Concentrate on your strengths, instead of your weaknesses… on your powers, instead of your problems.”
“Paul J. Meyer”
Sometimes… when you run across a “quote” – – – and you start to wonder why this person – – thought to say what you are reading – – your brain just has to wonder – – if there is something special – – that should be passed on to others???
In… Today’s WORLD – it seems to me – – that more and more of us are complaining about our fears and the great amount of problems that we are suffering from – – which are causing so much “weakness amongst the general public – – that there is no real motivation to do something – – which would be detrimental to all of us – – to sit back and only complain!
Did we have people who possessed more strengths – – during the 1940’s – while we AMERICA was at WAR – – did our LEADERS work to address the problems – – seeking cures for all AMERICANS – – – in that we were all ready and willing to work together – – – we would encourage our neighbors – to have “VICTORY GARDENS” – – save and collect every type of item that was needed for the WAR EFFORT – – because we all wanted to WIN!
AMERICANS – – were strong – – that is – – we were all willing to work and encourage everyone to be involved to do whatever was necessary – – – -even if it meant – – that we might have to do without…some thing – – that we thought we had to have – – our aim was to help our young MEN and WOMEN – – on the Battle Field – to strengthen and encourage them – – – – just to ensure that we had the “FREEDOM in AMERICA” for all – – something so many other COUNTRIES… do not have – – even TODAY!
WE are sharing our FREEDOM – -with others – – and it looks as if there is an under current in this COUNTRY – – that is working against the majority of us – – in such a way – that so many are not even aware of this. We are bogged down with so many promoters of the FEAR GAME – – that – -more and more citizens are giving in to their fears – – and letting small problems mushroom into mountains of doubt – – to the point – – that with the general bashing of good ideas and solutions – – to all of our problems – – that so many of us today – – would not recognize that correct way to take – – as they are undermining all the good that our FOREFATHERS have established – – with the CONSTITUTION – – – and are now developing a complete disregard with such hostility – – that most AMERICANS – – will not know what is happening – – until we are in a complete sate of … Chaos.

“JAMAICA” – Some real beauty!
Here … is where you will see a… “WOW” of a “HUMMINGBIRD!”
Chris asks me if I’m ready for a treat as he points out a beautiful iridescent emerald-colored bird, perched in front of us. The streamertail hummingbird – also known as the scissor-tail or doctor bird because of how it reminds locals of a doctor’s coat tails – briefly rests on a branch long enough for me to capture his image. I’m elated

I arrive back at the Hyatt Zilara just in time to toast the most gorgeous lavender-infused twilight sky. A fitting conclusion for my time in Jamaica
