“Learn to FLY and SING Our Songs”

        *** Altitude *** Airspeed *** and Brains ***

*** YOU Need Two – of the THREE – To Stay Alive ***

Lyrics to the Air Force Song

Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun; Here they come zooming to meet our thunder, At ’em, boys, Give ‘er the gun!  (Give ‘er the gun now!)  Down we dive, spouting our flame from under ,Off with one helluva roar! We live in fame or go down in flame.  Hey!  Nothing will stop the U.S. Air Force!  Minds of men fashioned a crate of thunder,  Sent it high into the blue; Hands of men blasted the world asunder;  How they lived God only knew! (God only knew then!)  Souls of men dreaming of skies to conquer   Gave us wings, ever to soar!  With scouts before And bombers galore.  Hey!  Nothing’ll  stop the U.S. Air Force!

Anchors Aweigh (Official song of the U.S. Navy)

Stand Navy out to sea,
Fight our battle cry
We'll never change our course,
So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll out the TNT,
Anchors Aweigh.
Sail on to victory
And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!

Anchors Aweigh, my boys,
Anchors Aweigh.
Farewell to foreign shores,
We sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay.
Through our last night ashore,
Drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more.
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.

Blue of the mighty deep
Gold of God's great sun.
Let these our colors be
Till all of time be done, done, done, done.
On seven seas we learn
Navy's stern call
Faith, courage, service true,
With honor, over honor, over all.

During WWII – my  brothers  Denny and Tommy and I knew the words to all  of the Military songs,  and as we would swing on the swings that my DAD made for us,  in our backyard – we would swing and sing so loud – that I do believe,  that we did help our soldiers WIN the WAR!    D.V.

“NATIONAL AVIATION DAY”

National Aviation Day - August 19

NATIONAL AVIATION DAY

National Aviation Day on August 19th recognizes the pioneers of human flight.

For centuries, humans have been fascinated by flight. In ancient China, kites few to investigate the weather. Inventors such as Leonardo da Vinci developed many ideas about flight. Gliders and balloons lifted humans into the sky, but none of the inventions gave a person control of where they flew.

Before Powered Flight

The physics of flight and propulsion play key roles in who became pioneers. George Cayley used aerodynamics while designing fixed-wing aircraft. His designs would later inspire Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Since propulsion is one of the primary requirements to lift a human into the sky for flight, it would make sense that an engine could provide that power. Samuel Langley, an astronomer from Boston, designed a steam-powered model called an aerodrome in 1891. It flew for 3/4ths of a mile.

After receiving a grant to build a full-sized aerodrome, Langley’s first test crashed. He never made another attempt.

First Powered Flight

In a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, two inventors eagerly began testing their ideas about flight. Brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, had studied Octave Chanute’s 1894 Progress in Flying Machines. The brothers set to work testing their designs, first with gliders. Eventually, they sought to add an engine.

Two American inventors and aviation pioneers, the Wright brothers are credited with inventing and building the world’s first successful airplane and making the first controlled powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903.

In 1902, Charles Edward Taylor joined their team in pursuit of powered flight. Since automobile companies couldn’t supply an engine light enough and powerful enough, they would have to build it. Taylor, a machinist, set to work building the 12-horsepower engine. It took Taylor 6 weeks to build the engine.

After completing the design, in September of 1903 Wrights returned to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Just months before, they had successfully tested their glider. However, setbacks and weather postponed the powered flight.

It wasn’t until mid-December that the brothers finally felt all was in order. After flipping a coin to decide who would pilot the machine, Wilbur climbed aboard. The first attempt failed, only flying 3.5 seconds. However, the brothers learned what worked.

The next attempt on December 17, 1903, Orville took the controls. After launching, the machine flew for 120 feet. Man flew.

Since that day, aviation exploded into the skies. Its applications became immediately apparent to the military. The Wrights consulted with the Army for several years after their success.

Now that humans could fly, they set new challenges – flying across oceans, around the world, and into space.

NATIONAL AVIATION DAY HISTORY

In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt established National Aviation Day by presidential proclamation designating the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday for the observance.  Born August 19, 1871, Orville Wright was still living when President Roosevelt issued the proclamation. Orville Wright continued living for nine more years until his death in 1948.

Proclamation USC 36:I:A:1:118 allows the sitting United States President to proclaim August 19 as National Aviation Day each year.  If desired, the President’s proclamation may direct all federal buildings and installations to fly the U.S. flag on that day. The President may encourage citizens to observe the day with activities that promote interest in aviation.

“O key – Dokey”

“O Key – Dokey” is the answer, that  I received on the “telephone”  earlier today,  when I was talking to my son, Lee.

So, all day – I kept hearing those silly words working around in my head – just could not stop thinking – that I have not heard anyone say “O key – Dokey” in maybe 50 years  or more. No one,  that I know of – has ever answered me – when talking – with a “O key – Dokey” and in such a silly little ole sing-song way?

Since it has been so long,  just had to check it out on line – just to see if there was a song – and just exactly  what the words  still meant?  Never can tell, what “words” mean, today!  Seems that some of the old stuff,  that we thought was okay and funny,  a hundred years ago,  well – it has an entirely different meaning today.

After my search on-line, found the above song for “kids” that seems to be all-right, as children are singing it, or so it looks and sounds like, to me.

The words still float around in my brain, just  guessing  that they will for awhile.  Waiting to use these same old words,  when my son, Lee calls back.  Boy, “OH-Boy” – will he  ever be surprised!  So I’m guessing, we  will have to find out – how and why and or where he picked up these silly old words – from a hundred years back or so? Guess we will be laughing for a long time,  on the phone – sure glad that,  this is not way back  in those “good ole” days, that, I can remember  – when we talked a long time on the phone –   “toll calls”  ended up, costing the “caller” a pretty  dine or two!

Let me know – if you have some silly “old time” words, that we do not use?  Just  maybe,   they need to be revised and or used again – maybe just for effect!

“Silly is”  as   “old SILLY  does”  and  “that would be me.” “Fun and laughter is the name of the game!”  “How else can one keep  their self,  young – and try to be a little younger,  than they really are!”

“If you have small children around – play the above song, “HOKEY – COKEY”   but, do  say the  old words “O key – Dokey” – see if they will remember, later on.”

When the children ask if they can do something, and you answer in a “sing-song” voice, “O key – Dokey”  and then you all,  will  start to laugh and continue having more “FUN” with more singing and dancing around,  just remember then,   that you are  making a terrific memory,  for all to remember, forever!

NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY – August 16

National Airborne Day - August 16

NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY

National Airborne Day on August 16th honors the military’s airborne divisions of the Armed Forces.

August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army.

In the U.S. Army currently, two airborne divisions operate. The 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina began as an infantry division. During World War I, the 82nd Division activation on 25 August 1917 at Camp Gordon. In 1918, they earned the nickname All American for the composition of their division. Since the soldiers came not from all across the country, but several were immigrants, too. The 82nd Division represented all of America as few other divisions did at the time.

The second and still active airborne division had a short-lived beginning. During World War I, the 101st Airborne Division organized for a short while during World War I on 2 November 1918. However, the war ended shortly after. During World War II, the Screaming Eagles were activated on 16 August 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. They currently make their home at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

Both units have served around the world in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions.

“Food For Thought – Words To Grow With”

“We have 24 hours, 86,400 seconds, 168 hours in a week, 35000 decisions on average a day. You can choose how to spend your time, time is how you prioritize it.”

Since the day you have been born, crying has been a sign you are alive.” –Unknown

“You can’t go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending”- C.S. Lewis

“You will either step forward into growth, or you will step backward into safety”- Maslow

“The experiences in your life do not define you, the experiences you have are situational. Life is full of circumstances that affect you and that have a significant influence on you, but they do not define you. Our life experiences are not the conclusion to who we are or who we are capable of becoming. There is not a situation that can take your worth and value away. How you perceive life is influenced by the experiences you have, create the experiences to live the life you want. it’s the choices that we make every day that determine who we will become and how we live.” –Rachel Velishek

“You might be sad because you’ve been through a lot, but you should also be proud of yourself for being strong enough to make it through everything you’ve been through.” – unknown

“Your story matters” – Unknown

“You can rise up from anything. You can completely recreate yourself. Nothing is permanent. you’re not stuck. you have choices. you can think new thoughts. you can learn something new. you can create new habits. All that matters is that you decide today and never look back.” –Unknown

“Never be a prisoner of your past. it was just a lesson, not a life sentence. Just Because you may be feeling broken remember, a Kaleidoscope is also made from broken parts. When you look through it, you see something beautiful in return.” – Unknown.

“It doesn’t matter what you’re looking at; it’s what you see.”

“Your story is unique and so, so different…and not worthy of comparison.” -Unknown.

“We are built from our mistakes that we have made, mistakes are opportunities to learn. 99% of people can’t see past hardship, they see that as a time to pack up, to leave, give up. Be the 1% who sees differently, who recognizes the opportunity. Believe in yourself to be different. If you want something bad enough, be uncomfortable, what hurts in the present moment is the same exact thing that will transform your life down the road.”

“What you say is the person that you want to be, what you do is the person you truly are. What you choose to focus on influences success. If you focus on your past, on what is not working for you will cause frustration. Focus on what you have right now, focus on what you are grateful for. If you want to thrive then focus on you, control your own thoughts. Believe in yourself, believe that tomorrow will be better than today. Ask for wisdom to help, don’t ask for things to be easier, and ask to get better. What happens does not control your life. What you decide to do with what happens controls your life. Your choices control your life. Your decisions. Your actions. You are the one who decides if you are going to quit at the first struggle, you decide if you won’t.”

“We have to let go of the life we have planned to accept the one that is waiting for us.” -Unknown

“People and things do not upset us, rather we upset ourselves by believing that they can upset us”-Albert Ellis

“When a toxic person can no longer control you, they will try to control how others see you. The misinformation will feel unfair, but stay above it, trusting that other people will eventually see the truth just like you did.” –Unknown

“Sometimes your circle decreases in size, but increases in value.” -Unknown

“The only people who get upset about you setting boundaries are the ones who were benefiting from you having none.” -TobyMac #speaklife

“Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, a heart that forgives the worst, a mind that forgets the bad, and soul that never loses faith.”.-Unknown

“Sometimes in life the most uncomfortable discussions are the ones that are the most important to have. Our children are capable of making mistakes just like we are. In fact, allowing them to make mistakes and learn the lessons that come with them will help them grow as individuals. Choose to speak truth to your children, it will teach resilience. When I speak truth I model that sometimes life is tough, we may hurt, but we communicate, we process, we feel, we cope, and we move forward.”

“When a person chooses to embrace forgiveness, they choose to live a life in spite of past hurt and pain. Letting go is not giving up. Letting go is not quitting…letting go simply means that you are aware that in order to experience anything new, better, or different you have to first let go. Know that time does not heal, that feeling bad is okay, that some things cannot be fixed. Not all wounds are meant to heal. Some wounds are meant to be remembered, the scars are lessons learned, tragedy we overcame, and hope for the future. It is okay to not be okay. It is okay to be just fine. It is okay to have a bad day. It is okay to have a great day and let the world know just how great it is. It is okay to acknowledge the good, bad, and indifferent.”

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind” -Dr. Seuss

“Take time each day to be alone with yourself, take the time to navigate your thoughts, explore your feelings. If you learn to love yourself just know you’ll never be alone and you will always love the company you’re with. You can’t pour from an empty cup. you need to take care of yourself first, so that you can take care of others.”

“No one can change your life except for you. Don’t ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind…Don’t you know things can change? Things will go your way If you hold on for one more day…You could sustain…You’ve got no one to blame for your unhappiness
Don’t you think it’s worth your time to change?” -Wilson Phillips

NATIONAL RELAXATION DAY

National Relaxation Day on August 15th encourages us to slow down and unwind. It’s a day to focus on taking care of ourselves and take a moment to relax.

National Relaxation Day is an important day as we all need a break from the fast-paced and often hectic lifestyles we live. But he was right! It has been proven that stress can be harmful to our health, both mentally and physically.  Most doctors will agree that finding ways to relax and finding ways to reduce stress will improve overall health.

What is your favorite relaxation activity?

  • Reading a book
  • Fishing with a friend
  • A picnic in the park
  • Walking along the beach
  • Taking a drive in the country
  • Spa
  • Golfing
  • Photography
  • A movie
  • Window shopping
  • Lunch with friends
  • Drinks with friends
  • Watching sports
  • Swimming

These are just a few of the many possible relaxation ideas that you may want to use to celebrate this holiday.
