Chief Eugene J. Camp, DSN 3016, was hired as a civilian ” Telephone Switch Board Operator” on 04/03/1937. He held various assignments as a civilian that also included assignments in the 11Th District, Central Division, Police Academy, and then back to the Central Division.

On 04/02/1942 he voluntarily terminated his employment with the police department and enlisted into the United States Air Force for military service during World War II.

At the conclusion of his enlistment he was rehired by the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department and received his commission as a Police Officer on 01/02/1946. Upon completion of the academy he was assigned to the following Districts and Divisions through out his career. They were the Central Division, Personnel Division, Bureau of Field Operations, 4Th, 8Th, 7Th & 8Th (as one assignment), 3Rd, 4Th, Bureau of Field Operations, and finally the Office of the Chief on 02/05/1970, when he was appointed to the position of Chief of Police. He held that position from 02/05/1970 to 07/22/1982. When Chief Camp retired on 07/23/1982, he had complted 45.3 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

Chief Camp was also a veteran of World War II and achieved the rank of Air Force Master Sergeant.

Chief Camp was the son of Fred H. and Elizabeth Camp. It should be noted that Chief Camp’s father and brother were both Police Officers on the Saint Louis Police Department.
