“Grandma Brady and Irene, daughter”

img091

Our Grandma, Anne E. Smart Brady and  daughter, Irene Brady Riley – celebrating  Irene’s “Birthday”

This picture is taken at Grandma Brady’s – backyard – 1928 – Aunt Irene is the big  40 and Grandma is 76 years old. When you want to celebrate – you would want Grandma Brady to have the “PARTY” at her house – she could bake and cook better than anyone. Grandpa Brady  would never eat anywhere but at home – his wife was the best  – and there was no sense paying for second best when you could enjoy the best of everything at home with your wife!

Aunt Irene had the best of teachers – when it came to learning all about the cooking and baking skills needed to keep your husband well fed and very healthy – because you are what you eat – and the best of foods need someone to prepare – someone that knows how to shop and then, cook and bake  in such a way that the people will be healthly and live longer – when you have soneone who truly – cares!

“Celebrating with Aunt Irene”

img090

Aunt Irene with nephew,  Denny H. McClarren, Jr and his wife Judy. This picture is on the playground of the German St. Vincent Orphan Home – one of their picnics (maybe 1965)?  –  Our Aunt Irene Riley and some of the Ladies from the Our Lady of Sorrows Church usually operate one of the many booths to make money for the Orphanage and other Charities that Aunt Irene is associated with.

Looks like everyone is having a very good time and the crowd  in the picture  – looks like more and more are coming and  will be a good money making day for the Orphan Home!

For a black and white picture – it seems to me that you can almost  see how “RED” my brother Denny’s hair is!  This reminds me,  that when we were kids at this Orphanage  – that my brother,  Denny would always win the prize for selling the most “CHANCE TICKETS” that we Kids were suppose to sell on  “Picnic”  Days. Everytime I would approach someone and ask them if they would want to buy a ticket, the reply would always be, “We just bought from “RED”!”  – No one had a chance  – every one likes a “kid” better, who’s hair is “RED!”

“Happy Birthday” – Aunt Irene!

img089

“Happy Birthday Aunt Irene!”   This picture looks like it may have been taken in your back yard on Ashland, Saint Louis, Missouri.  Since I was not yet here on earth – when I look at this picture – I just  have to see what I can remember from pictures that I hhave seen with people  that I know and  can remember their ages and what is going on – in the picture – and all of this is for me  – to explain to those in the family that may not have ever seen these pictures and would not know  – who is in this picture and possibly what the occasion is for taking a picture – as a hundred years ago  – you just did mot see photographers   running around taking photos – like you see today.

So, with all of that said –  You look as though you have just had your hair done, as it looks very nice , each wave of hair done up so nicely – your dress is much better than some of the “DAY-Frocks”  you have had pictures taken in –  you have a very cheerful smile and are looking  very  “HAPPY”  – so my guess is,  that you are celebrating your   “BIRTHDAY” – TODAY!

Is It Your Birthday – Tomorrow?

img088

“Aunt Irene, Is it your Birthday – tomorrow?”   “My Daddy said that he was going to bake a special cake for you and that we will be having a “Birthday Party”  just for you!”    “I just want to know, because  – Moma said that I could make something special for you  – with all the  beautiful  crayons and papers,   she gave me!”

“Aunt Irene – would you like for me to make a picture of you and me – having “FUN” on your Birthday?”

July 17, 1888   –   Irene C. Brady Riley  –   Birthdate.

“Accidents” are Learning Lessons!

Each day that you are on this earth – you need to remember one very important “fact of life” – pay attention to what is going on as somewhere in a day’s time – there is a special lesson for you, for your special retention – that without this “Lesson for this Day” – there will be an expensive situation in your “Horizon” – requiring “knee-jerk” reaction – which you will only then be able to activate the subconscious mental awareness- necessary to save your “LIFE” or another’s!

Each day that I went to work – the only change to my head – was for me to carefully wash my face and stay away from the “HEAD-WRAP” as the hospital had ordered. I had called the hospital and told them that my hair was as stiff as a board and felt like it would break off in pieces – if there is only some way that I could do something? Due to the area and damage done – infection would hit me too hard too fast – “Leave the head alone!” So, After hitting the age of (40) – you soon – enough get the message – “It’s a Dog eat Dog – World” – and you had better be strong enough to stand on your own two feet – you are now the care-taker of your future – “stand up for yourself “ – wise cracks you hear, are only the “Wise-cracker’s” own miserable cry for “HELP” – since they just do not have the strong back-bone that you possess to keep yourself on top.

When you put yourself into a situation like I did, the only next thing is keep your focus on your healing by doing what the doctors recommend. Keep the attitude “Positive” – forget any remarks that you may hear and pray for those that are unsympathetic and of a non- understanding nature – as there are some in this world that take real delight in another’s misfortune. For years, I have found that – for me to take a few minutes each day – before leaving the house for work – just read something from the “BIBLE” and mark the date on that page – leaving the Bible open at all times – so that the “Word from Almighty God” was waiting for me to respond – it is so wonderful to have a real connection with YOUR CREATOR –and reading the Bible and listening to a good Christian radio station has helped me overcome lots of daily hardships that just have a way of popping up and so unforeseen?

Years later – when I was going to have the Hair-Dresser do a Perm – she said due to the scar on the top of my head – she would take hair from each side  of the scar  for curler/roll area and hopefully when the hair was combed – people would not see and or may not notice the scar? Like I said earlier – “it is good not to have eyes in the back of  our heads – we would never be satisfied with how we look?” Some day – I should live so long; I think I may just look into getting myself a wig? Although and then tomorrow, when I give this a second thought – my question to myself will be – “What in the world do you need a “WIG” for anyway? “Who’s looking at your “HEAD?”

“Monday Morning” – must go to Work!

Just because I had to try and open the top of my head with the tree limb – have an emergency trip to the “HOSPITAL” – now have (13) thirteen stitches holding the top of my head together – and the way my head looks – NO MATTER WHAT – I have to go to “WORK!”

The best thing in “LIFE” is that our face is in the front of our body and whatever is behind us – who cares? It is a good thing that – that I can ignore comments that I don’t like and move on,  as if I do not hear them, and just get a “BIG LAUGH” over the things people will say, thinking that your ears don’t work, just because your head has some kind of “bandage-wrap” – and this “wrap” has to serve a specific purpose!

When I first arrived at work – the girls that work near me are the first in looking me over and start asking questions – and continue looking at my head – and when I  sit down – there is always someone that has to look inside the  “WRAP” opening – they stand behind you – as if they are expecting my brains to start popping out any minute? Cannot forget about the men that work in nearby areas and they have some information from the women employees – but there is nothing like getting up close and getting something exciting – something that they can tell their families when they get home after work – especially if they have kids that like to hear about the accidents about co-workers.

Has there ever been a survey of the amount of “work- time” loss on the job – when an injured worker shows up for work – and because of the injury is looking different or is trying to do their jobs – but something is different about them and most of the day is wasted – telling almost each of the fellow employees – each and every detail of what happened and  are only trying to do a fair-day’s work – for a “fair-day’s” pay – if that is possible?

Where I was working – when this happened – I also, had to wait on customers. I especially remember one customer – I walked up to,  to wait on her, and was talking to her and all she could do was look at me as if there was something radically wrong with me? I was getting vibes – that she seem to be offended that I would walk up to her and even talk to her – evidently – there was something wrong with me and she was going to let me know just exactly – what she had on her mind – to inform me – the correct way to report to work and the correct dress code – according to her – in case I was not aware of how one should look and dress in the work place?

Since this was not my business, and am only an employee – I listened? “Don’t you know how to dress correctly for the work-place – you have some kind of crazy head arrangement on the top of your head, which does not match your dress – and the worst part of the way you have fixed your hair – you did not comb it and it is sticking out so crazy – it is highly distracting to people looking at you!” She said and continued with, “I’m surprised your “BOSS” did not send you home!” My  reply, “I was in the hospital and this is the way they want me to leave my head till the stitches can be taken out!”
