I grew up in Oakville,MO. I grew up during a time when everyone treated each other with respect. We didn’t eat fast food. We drank Kool-aid, ate PB&J sandwiches, Bologna sandwiches, hot dogs, and veggies we grew in the garden. I grew up during a time when we went outside to play games, ride bikes , jumped rope, climbed trees , played hide & seek, There was no bottled water. No microwave or cable. No cell phones! No hair straighteners. If you were bad in school, you got in trouble there and when you got home your parents already knew and you got in trouble again.. prayers and paddling were allowed in school and you behaved. Our house was left unlocked, going home from school we didn’t have to carry house key. You opened the windows and turned on the fan…at night…We played outside until called to come in Everyone played together.

You LEARNED from your parents and grandparents instead of disrespecting them and treating them as if they knew nothing. What they said might as well have been the gospel. When you were told to do something, you did not ask Why. YOU DID IT and Did IT IMMEDIATELY!!!
If someone had a fight, that’s what it was…a fist fight or Scuffle and you were back to being friends after. Kids didn’t have guns and never thought of taking a life, especially not their own. You had to be close enough to home to hear your Mom yelling to tell you it’s time to come home for dinner. And we ate around the dinner table and talked to each other!
School was MANDATORY. We had GOD, sang our National Anthem and said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. We listened to our teachers and obeyed. We practiced fire drills where we marched outside in orderly fashion. Most Families attended Church somewhere on Sundays. We Dressed up for Church, it was GOD’s House so we wore our Sunday Best.
We were never “afraid” to go to school because of the thought of some screwball coming in. We held doors, carried groceries, didn’t expect our parents to hand us everything and gave up our seat without being asked to.
You didn’t hear curse words on the TV or in our home . “Please” and “Thank you” were part of our daily dialogue!
