“School and Work after School”

While I was attending HIGH SCHOOL I could have signed up for playing “Basketball” as I was the “BASKETBALL” star in Grade School, but then I would not have been able to work after School – to help  my Mother with our bills. Since to ‘work’ seem to be the object     of getting ahead in LIFE,  I went to “Summer School” to earn two extra credits, with the hopes of getting out of School sooner.

After the last “Summer School” section and only needing  four more credits to receive my “Diploma”  took a chance at applying for work with the “Telephone Company” – and was wearing my blue skirt and white blouse which when wearing usually would be hired. Something that was unbelievable always happened – with that outfit, I usually would receive what I was asking for. Guess everyone  has  something   just a little more appealing to others – – that will always end positively  perfect!

This interview included some different tests for me to take, like  testing to see if I was good with numbers and or words  and questions requiring quick  answers and if I could differentiate  the different sound of coins dropped into a “Coin Telephone” because  a “Telephone Operator” has to know what the coins sound like,  when asking for  $2.65  from a customer making a “Person to Person” call to Oklahoma!

After all of the testing, there were a couple of others,  that I had to talk with – just to see what they thought and or get some idea of who I am, and then with  their opinion of me – – would I be good enough and worth the time to train me?  So when all of hat was done, there was the fact that I only needed a couple of credits, to get my diploma  from High School and graduate with the “January” class – “How do we know that you will not quit the learning,  which takes all of  a  four week training course,  while you are being paid?”

NOW, for the last hurdle, “You are only seventeen and you will have to get a “Worker’s Permit” as  one must be eighteen to start to work, here!” This has to be done immediately, so with the address and the telephone number, I had to call and get their hours and a list of what I needed to bring to their office. I do not know if I am correct – but for some reason it seems that their location was on Grand Avenue.

My first stop was to go to  my  HIGH SCHOOL, “Beaumont” and get all of the “Paper Work” to take to the office for the Worker’s Permit – -and then with all of that, rush downtown to 1010 Pine Street, 63101,  take everything back to the employment office which may have been on the “9th floor” and let them have all of this completed paper work! With a little waiting time – everything needed to be checked and double checked – – and I am promising that I will not  quit my new  job – – just to  go back to “HIGH SCHOOL” in just a week!

All I can say – – is that there is someone directing our feet – here on earth – as I sure did do a heck of a lot of running here and there in a hurry,  for that job – – and,  If  I wanted to take the time – – I could go to my file –  and pull out all of the copies to all of this –  as,  I do keep copies of important stuff – and,  at the time – this was the most important  thing,  that I was doing!      D.V.
