“Cooking Glass of 1952”
This photo is taken of the 8th grade class of girls that will be graduating on June 8th, 1952 from German St. Vincent’s Orphan Home – Normandy, Missouri.
When it was determined to add the Gymnasium on the Orphan Home 20 acres property – in the basement a “Roller Rink” was set up and all the children received instructions for skating – and some of the children were absolutely terrific skaters as the “Shows ” that were put on – ticket sales always drew large attendance and I think that with some more instruction for the “Stars” of the shows – some could have gone to Hollywood and really made it “BIG!”
Also, on the lower level of the Gymnasium was the above pictured “KITCHEN” – something that was thought of as a help for the girls that would be leaving the Home – an idea of how to make meals and cook – by actually learning in a home- style kitchen – since some of the children at the HOME – were maybe never in a home-style kitchen. An Alumni Lady was the instructor who showed up in good weather and the program was a lot of writing in our note books – I’m going to try to find my old note book – just for fun to see exactly what we were suppose to learn? But, we never really cooked a home-style meal! That would have really made an impression on me and my brain to remember – forever!
In the picture – L. to R. – Elma Rutherford – Gail Porter – Betty Jean Musgrove – Violet Pheiffer – Jeanne Saettelle – Theresa Wieland – Mary Agnes Seidmeyer – Mary Ellen McClarren, with cook book – Stella Santoyo – Elenora Faucher
