The Ice Man Cometh!
Do young kids get out of the house during the day to see and hear what is really happening on the block and in the neighborhood where they live? Take us in the ’40s, and WWII years, not every family had a refrigerator, some still had an Ice Box. These families still had to keep their food cold and would have to have regular deliveries of blocks of ice!
This is what we kids liked, when the man with the truck full of blocks of “ice”, stopped. The truck would stop where it would serve as many customers , without the driver having too far to run with these blocks of ice. We stood by waiting for pieces of ice to fly as the driver cut out the size for this customer or that one , each getting just exactly what they ordered. The ice man threw a leather pad over his shoulder and with the “ice tongs” around a block of ice, swing the block on to the shoulder and oft he would run to the customer waiting and put in the “Ice Box”
Kids today – Young ones don’t get to see how it was before everybody had all of Today’s new electrical wizardry!
