“Card Playing Social Club”

img041

“In the beginning…this was the earlier group of younger ladies… who just loved to meet monthly for a chance of having so much FUN…playing cards –  – – they are not even thinking about taking a nice dip in the “LAKE”  – – that has that inviting …come hither  and alluring call.

That is our  “Aunt Irene C. Riley” – – sitting down on the ground  – and on the left side of this photo. We do not see  our friendly “Mrs. Agnes Callahan” on this photo… but there is an empty chair… and we do not know who is taking this photo???

Can you imagine playing cards with these ladies at the table…their faces kind of  indicate to me… that playing POKER  – is the game that they play best…as they all seem to have a very good “POKER FACE” – – you would lose more often than not – since you would be clueless…as to their next move???

“Mrs. Agnes Callahan”

img039

“How would you like to play cards…with one of these  …”Saint Louis Sharpies” they are all out to WIN!”

On the right side of this photo…sitting…and giving you the best smile…that is so inviting to whom …  ever in the world that she meets is…Mrs. Agnes Callahan.

NOW… on the left side of this photo… and also on the left side of the two-step… and if you look – – will see an arrow on he left of the photo…indicating that  – that person kind of leaning on her right elbow – and looking toward the person taking this photo… is my Aunt Irene C. Riley… and she is a member of this “Card Playing Social Club.”

This is only the first of the many photos –  where  photos  are taken at  various members homes – – where they meet monthly  – – and this is an all day “card-playing” affair – – just to see who is the BIG WINNER!

img040

Another photo… that includes both  our good… FRIEND,  Mrs. Agnes Callahan and also our Aunt Irene C. Riley.  Aunt Irene is now facing  the camera, as there were a couple of these  photos taken on this day…of the  “Card Players” – – and Aunt Irene was missing from her spot – – –  with another lady… sitting in her spot – so I’m guessing that some of the ladies take turns… taking the pictures –  – – giving everyone a chance to have photos  – of at least everyone in the “Social Card Playing Club!”

One should remember that these ladies in the  “DAY”  when the ladies were “LUCKY” to have a good husband – – who went to work every day – – and having  a very  good paying position – – just so  that the “House-wife” would be able to do “Volunteer Work”  – – like my Aunt Irene did for the “RED CROSS” wrapping bandages in addition to taking the  “RED CROSS” course of study – – to be ready for any emergency – – and then for those ladies who would still have “FREE TIME” on their hands…and would like  to play  cards!

BUT…in the case with my Aunt Irene… she could  “bake and cook”  better than most of the top CHEFS – –  and she would cook the foods as they should be…so that her husband always had a very  “GOOD” meal – –  and his meals were prepared with “LOVE” –  and –  the idea that he would always be…  healthy…   wealthy…and wise!

“WHO” – – is This??

img035

This looks like the   back of the “WARNE  AVENUE” four-family flat??

Here is what I did. By putting this photo on this  “POST” – and then …clicking on the photo… had  the above photo … just large enough – – so that I could tell …from what I was looking at – – this is Miss Marie Brady  and it looks like little “BERNIE RILEY”  that she is holding – maybe –   holding him and helping him to blow his nose – – or wiping off his face – – or even just giving him something to eat???

The dress for the “TIMES” looks correct. Marie is wearing a long dark skirt – with high top black shoes –  which was  exactly – – that which the ladies were   wearing in the first quarter of the 1900’s – – – and then there is just enough of her face… that I know – since – guessing the time frame – Marie would be getting married maybe twenty years  in the future and then Marie would be having me.

I remember that my MOTHER had told me so often – – that she so enjoyed taking care of little “BERNIE” –  for her sister,  Irene Brady Riley. Little   “BERNIE” was just the best little boy that any one would want – – and because he was so special …and such a really good child – – that some tines – that is one reason that he did not get to live a longer life??? We do have to remember – – that not all of us are pre-destined …according to the CREATOR’s plan for us – – to all live for a real long time… here on earth –  – – just like my sister,   KAREN’s  identical twin, KATHLEEN – –  – was only here – – on earth… for one week??? There are so many things that we just do not have the answers for – and just have to live with the FAITH…and HOPE… that in believing that all the things the CREATOR wants for us here on earth  – are possible and done according to HIS – GOOD WORD – – for us to follow.

“Uncle John Brady’s…wife Catherine…”

img033

This is a photo  – that was in Aunt Irene Brady Riley’s  old shoe box —with several others – – with the “TIME” frame  of   early 1900’s to 1969 – – that would be the year that Aunt Irene went to her Heavenly Rest –  – no one took the time to check out… who was “WHO” in the old shoe box???

At the top of this photo is …and in Aunt Catherine’s own handwriting… to Irene  and from  Catherine Brady.

What …I know of  Uncle Johnny and Aunt Kitty… that is what she was called – –  Uncle Johnny had the job of “chemist” he did the mixture and soundness of the concrete  that was used for the building of the major downtown Saint Louis buildings – and he must have been very good at his work… as the buildings are still here.

Due to the type of work he had done… Uncle Johnny had cancer so bad that even after having had major surgery back then…  in his condition he would have to stop into an alley and change the bag – – – and then would continue on to walk to Church on Sundays – – and he would be ready to do the same type of change as necessary …on the way home. Back then, Sunday was a day of REST… you go to Church with your FAMILY… and enjoy a very nice “Chicken” dinner…with all the FAMILY…and even sometimes FRIENDS…sharing a nice day of REST…as prescribed by our Creator!

On Sundays…It seem to me as a small little girl…the whole FAMILY would dress …and girls and all women wore a hat to Church… as we all had our Sunday “best” clothes on…and also as we would be walking for several blocks to Church and back to our home – – there would be FAMILY and FRIENDS…that lived on some of the streets that we would walking…and every so often we would stop on the was and talk – – that is the adults would talk and we children would stand around – – – behaving ourselves…as we were to e seen and not heard from.

“A favorite… Aunt Kathleen!”

img032

This is one of our favorites… “Aunt –  Kathleen Riley Michaels”

img038

This must have been “PICTURE  TAKING” day! With all the big smiles – sure looks like everybody is  HAPPY!  – – And when you have a new and beautiful baby in the FAMILY – – nothing better than to take plenty of pictures and share them to all the world!

Aunt Irene took me to IOWA…when I was a little girl…to visit with LEANE – – who is Aunt Kathleen’s daughter…and this baby that Aunt Kathleen is holding must be one of LEANE’s children…as there are plenty of their pictures in the shoe box – – that I have been looking through.

Generally…old pictures that are in boxes – – and no one –  today has any idea of who the pictures are of – – or what FAMILIES – – since the people and FAMILIES have all played their part on this stage of LIFE… and now are on the much higher and better part of LIFE… or so I suppose that to be the case for most of us??? When you think about being here for awhile  – – and then to move on to the stage… I sometimes wonder if  – – and this is a big  “IF” – did we read and do the part that we were ask to do… correct and according to all the rules and regulations as prescribed… by the CREATOR…to forever live in the HEAVENLY realms…above???

Just need to make clear… Aunt Kathleen is Aunt Irene’s – – sister-in-law…as Aunt Kathleen in Mr. WM. B. Riley’s.  sister –  Kathleen Riley Michaels.    So…now we all know…who is who!
